  • The Government and Allotments

Don't know if this is in the right place.

Hi this is my first post and maybe a little controversial sorry.

How many people saw the article in a well known tabloid with respect to the Governments plans to scrap the requirement of local councils to provide allotment land for people. A Mr Paul Peacock stated that if this goes through there will be "nowhere for poor people to grow their own food". That is another topic in itself but on the governments plans which could effectively mean councils closing down more plots to sell of the land for building. What are peoples thoughts on this Draconian move by our government who say they are committed to peoples health and well-being and reducing the Fake carbon footprint and even faker global warming issue?

    Your views please?

    Regards Bill

I think you would have to repeal an act of parliament first. It won't happen. The councils should sell the lands tothe plot holders in trust. Each site can then be self managed but rents are bound tovrise to pay for costs. The allotments are heavily subsidised at present.

    Bring it on I say.....

    Loving my allotment!

The government have repealed many acts in recent years, a land act aint going to get in the way. I am sure that land would be sold to allotment holders at extortionately inflated prices. This doesn't remove the fact that this law if scraped would result in people on low incomes etc. being unable to grow their own food. One only has to look at what is happening in the USA with the introduction of the FSA which supports big agriculture over small farmers and freeholders with the additional attack on alternative / organic alternatives to mass produced GM foods which big Agra is pushing to not have to be labelled. See how governments are destroying individuals ability to support and be self sufficient in these difficult times. Any government who purposes to support nutritional health should not even be considering this plan.

      Your views please?

      Cheers Bill

The gov't did actually run a consultation on this, lots of people were posting and asking people to speak up for allotments. Did anybody bother? If not, then it's a bit late to get het up about it

Hi Firstly thanks for your views.

Secondly the question is relating to the governments plans so it's not about getting het up as you imply.

Thirdly If this was in consultation who was it in consultation with? As I have seen read or heard nothing about this plan in the local or national media.

I am not a plot holder so as a member of the general public I have not been made aware of these plans so if plot holders where aware of it why did they not address the issue with people in the local boroughs to highlight this issue? To say that it was done as a consultation and if people didn't speak out it's not worth getting het up about I feel does a disservice to everyone else who is not in the loop. and to be honest it says a lot about the selfish nature of existing plot owners if they couldn't even bring these issues to public knowledge.

Many people these days are unaware of the importance of speaking out if they don't see something directly affecting them however there are many people who do realise the importance of such matters not only to nutritional health but to mental spiritual and community health to name a few.

Anyone else have a view on this did you know about the plans if so did you raise public awareness or did you just shout in your little circle of allotment holders? If it is the latter as a none plot holder and someone who will always support important community initiatives and services all I can say is shame on you.

          Cheers Bill

I'm not a plot holder. However, when made aware of the issue, I posted my views in the appropriate manner.

I think maybe I'm missing your point?

There were at least another 2 threads on this issue. I responded to it, but I can't answer for anyone else.

I suspect the reason you didn't read it in the media is either because the gov't didn't make a push to advertise their plans, or you read/watch media which isn't interested in publishing anything anti-gov't - if no-one responds they can do what they like...

Excuse me? "Shame on you" ?? I am sure you don't mean that to be as rude as it sounds? Stick around for a bit, use the search button and then you will see for yourself how politically active folk are here or not.

Hi SarzWix please don't misinteprate my previous responce I'm a nice guy really but do jump all over these issues with a passion because I want to see a free society return too the UK but thats political so will steer away from that don't want to get into trouble lol

Glutton4 whilst there where threads on this forum I have only joined today and there in lays the problem unless you belong to a group ie you grow veg, fish do martial arts no one ever looks outside of their group and says hey hang on this don't just impact us this impacts everyone else and it's only when you see the final draft in the paper that you as a member of the general public see what's actually been going on. I appreciate it was on this forum but as I said I just joined only found out yesterday when it was too late so can only ask questions now and get others feedback..

                  Cheers Bill

That's a little unfeeling when One can only react to something once they have been made aware of it. But hey each to their own I hope I can repay a similar dept to others one day.

But on a serious note do you not see the implications to future growers who will not have anywhere to grow food. Imagine the power big corporations will have when only they can grow and produce food most of which will be GM food. I'm surprised this was not raised as a bigger issue when you see how the FDA in the USA is now affecting small farm holders garden growers and organic / alternative growers. look past the smaller issue here and you will see how it compares to the FDA in the fact it removes our ability to survive without global control.

Yes. That's why I posted the thread on the topic in the first place. Glad you are around to assist us in looking past the smaller issues though - where would we have been without your input?

Why are you so aggressive on the Vine on your 'first' day? And you wonder why threads on other forums have been ignored

Did you get a book on Global Economics for Easter or something?

FionaH I feel no shame, I have nothing to be ashamed off. I merly ask the question and discover that people on these sites where aware of something the general public wasn't and it is the fact that this wasn't pushed more in the public arena by the people that knew that is the real shame.

I will keep my political views restrained but I have nothing to be ashamed of.

When the time comes that speaking your mind or holding your views back on something that has major implications on peoples lives is a bad thing then we have lost our humanity.

All I wanted was to know people views as I was unaware of this plan until I saw it in the newspaper and I shocked to find out it is common knowledge on these forums.

Peace and love and all that stuff
