  • Is there life in Scunthorpe?

    Hi,
I'm new to allotments and looking for people in the local area (Scunthorpe) to offer advice on local sites etc..?

    Is there life in Scunthorpe..?

Hi Jon - welcome to the Vine! I'm not sure about lotties in Scunthorpe - its 24 years ago since I got married and moved to Ashby, I guess things have changed somewhat since then! Have you tried ringing your local council? We have someone here in Preston council who knows where lotties are etc. Good luck - keep everyone posted on how you get on. Bernie

Hi and welcome to the vine Jon Scun. Sorry, too far away to help with your query - just wanted to say hello.
      Happy Gardening,

Hi Jon! Right, here we go:

There are lottie sites at: Somervell Road, Buckingham Avenue, Westcliff Avenue, Healey Road, and Bottesford Lane. Rents are £18 per yr. Ring the council on 01724 297843 or go to the web site: http://www.northlincs.gov.uk/NorthLi...ure/allotments

Good Luck! Do let us know how you get on - you could also try nipping down to the sites and asking around to see if there are any vacant plots - show that you are eager - you never know, you might get lucky! Bernie
PS the link should read Leisure not sure why there are dots

Thanks for the welcome. I have my name down for an allotment, the council tell me there is a 3-4 week wait (this was 2 weeks ago). Been past my chosen site, there is a sign saying plots available, so fingers crossed it won't be long...

Hi Jon - I'd nip down and say hello - it wont do any harm. A 4 week waiting list? Joy! the first site here in Preston had a 4year waiting list - but I was lucky enough to get my half lottie after only a couple of weeks waiting - consider myself to be a very lucky girl! Whereabouts in Scunny are you? Bernie

Took my driving test in Scunny - if I remember rightly is there a hill near the hospital? I had to do my hill start there. Yes I did pass! We also lived in the top half of a house in a street of the main shopping centre - the pub across the road was the local, how shall I put this? Erm, if you wanted to spend the night with a lady then you could do! Opposite our flat was the hyundai car showroom! (like I said 24 years ago - but loads of happy memories and I still keep in touch with lots of mates) Fingers crossed for your lottie! Bernie

Must be a great place ..... everyone leaves

Welcome to the vine Jon, DDL is right 4 weeks is a breeze but I'd stick my nose in and have a natter to the guys on the site and get some info on the place - You'll probably end up with some free veggies and loads of usefull advice

Are people usually receptive to someone just popping down?

I would nip down on a saturday or sunday morning - eternal sunshine (another vine member) came to visit our site twice, but also went to the one next door - because she was eager, she got a lottie within a couple of weeks! Dont forget, gardeners are always willing to have a natter and show off what they are doing - you never know you may get some freebies! Explain that you are waiting for a lottie and take it from there. Good luck. Bernie
