  • 4 year crop rotation plan

    Here is my 4 year plan - drawn up from all over the place. It's only intended as a starting point as I know some people don't like rigid plans:

    Year 1
    (Solanaceae)
    Spring/Summer
    potatoes tomatoes peppers aubergines
    Companionsnions nasturtium marigold parsley cucumber
    Soil requirements:No lime; plenty of manure and organic matter in spring. Follows:Brassicacaceae

    Autumn/Winter
    Autumn planted nions garlic leeks green manure

    Year 2
    (Alliaceae & Umbelliferae)
    Spring/Summer
    garlic carrots leeks celeriac onions celery shallots fennel parsley parsnip Companions:sage tomato lettuce rosemary
    Soil requirementsnions: organic matter; moderate fertiliser; woodash
    roots: no fresh organic matter; moderate fertiliser; little water Follows:Solanaceae

    Autumn/Winter
    Autumn planted :Grazing Rye or Phycelia

    Year3
    (Leguminaceae)
    Spring/Summer
    broad beans french beans runner beans peas clover winter tares
    Companions:radish cucumber sweetcorn turnip
    Soil requirements:Plenty of organic matter; not much fertiliser; water when pods forming. Follows:Alliaceae & Umbelliferae

    Autumn/Winter
    Autumn planted :Winter tares

    Year 4
    (Brassicaceae)
    Spring/Summer
    broccoli brussels sprouts cabbage cauliflower radish swede turnip Companions:beetroot spinach onion family
    Soil requirements:Alkaline soil and plenty of fertiliser.Apply leaf mould in Autumn. Follows:Leguminaceae

    Autumn/Winter
    Autumn planted :Winter brassicas

    spinach beetroot courgettes squashes lettuce radish cucumbers celery sweetcorn melons
