Obtaining Purer Seed from Chillies

I'm a stickler for trying to get pure seed for both my Tomatoes and Chillies, so this season I'm trying a different technique to try and get purer seed on some of my Chilli varieties, without the need to bag the blossoms.
There is a process where if a chilli flower is dipped in a PVA glue, it effectively stops the pollination from an outside source, which in theory will give purer seed when the fruit matures for seed saving. As the emerging fruit expands as it grows, it bursts the glued flower petals and continues to grows as normal.

I have to admit, this idea is fabulous and rather quick to do. Anyone who has ever fitted blossom bags on Chillies/Peppers knows how fragile the flower stems can be, with the glue all that risk is avoided altogether.

Davyburns its just PVA glue the white glue you may have used in art class at school you get at in all good DIY shops and some bad ones too!!! Or you could try at a art and craft shop.

I'm a new member and WOW, this is really interesting! Are you concerned about cross pollination with other types of chilies? I'm not very knowledgeable about growing chilies. I have been trying some of the milder types with fairly good success. Hadn't really thought about cross pollination issues until I spotted this forum. You've given me something to consider, since my DH would like to try a couple of the "hotter" varieties this year. Thanks

Welcome to the Vine

Chillis cross pollinate so if we are saving seed, we have to isolate each flower to stop the insects moving pollen around - if it's just for eating then there's no need to do this.

Here's a dumb question or two...

The sealed flower will self-polinate? Does it need tapping, or anything? I think I gently tapped my stems last year to encourage pollination, was this unnecessary?
