I only mentioned it out of mischief . I know I'm a bu@@er . On a serious note and it doesn't matter in your case matey as that is hardly big enough to call a weed , onions don't like competition for nutrients so they are best kept weed free.

and even growing a companion plant

Haven't forgotten to take a few pics, just been incredibly busy. Should have been evicted from my plots today at 2.00pm but elected members of the Council had this postponed(hopefully cancelled) and are to debate my situation in Council on Wednesday with a view to me being able to keep my plots and to sort out the expenses situation as well so I have everything crossed

Just over a week and the difference is quite noticeable.

I started mine from seed at the end of February, as mentioned they are all the smaller ones on the right hand side of the bed....

Not for a while yet CG..you should be able to see the tops of them at the moment I presume?
Later on when fully formed and greenery is dying off, you can loosen them from the soil...

You might be best start a new thread as this one is specifically for growing onions started from seed and progress of same

when should I start scraping the soil away a bit, so that the onion is effectively 'sitting' on the soil?

He must be very embarrassed about their size then. Tell him I've seen lots of small onions in my time
