  • Sowed some Red Brunswick in the propagator a couple of days back

    • Also sown Ailsa Craig in a tray. Once they are big enough I have a bed with ground cover which has holes in, use a small dibber and drop them in same as leeks. I use a small cooking blowlamp to make holes in the ground cover it makes a very neat hole and also melts and seals the edges which stops the fibres from coming apart and can be used again many times.

      • Potted on the onions from a few weeks back and also started some Alisa Craig.

        • I sowed Sturion and Ailsa Craig about two weeks ago.
Pricked out the Sturion in to 40 x 1" fibre pots at the weekend, looks like I lost a few though, so I've placed a few seeds in to the vacant modules, these will catch up, i'm sure.

Today I decided to leave the Ailsa Craig where they are in the pot, and instead placed a few seeds into each of 40 modules, on the basis that any which don't take can be substituted with the ones I left in the pot.

I also have my Japanese Yellow Sensu sets down on the allotment which have been in since around September/October.

            • Hi Folks

Onions have all flopped over, rows 3 - 5, should I repot them and if so should I sink the bottom growth under soil?

              • Hi Danny. The first leaves do flop over don't worry about. Subsequent leaves will come stronger or you can make little wire loop supports to help.

Maybe watering with a viagra mix might sort it.

Following on from that, perhaps they just need stroking....

                      • I never use wire loops I just leave them to themselves, maybe throw a bit of plant feed around them.

                          Now there's a sensible comment

                          • I think perhaps that the seed has not been sown deep enough. With a little more depth, there would be more stem below ground level to support the top growth.

I stopped sowing on top of the compost and covering with fine vermiculite because of that problem. I do use supports for my show onions but 8 dozen reds pricked out today have no support whatsoever .

                            • Onions(and leeks) in the blowaway inside the greenhouse, now in pots, but still some thinning/transplanting of the Ailsa Craig's will be required.

                              • That's the Ailsa Craig onions planted out in the raised beds, strong looking plants with the roots well established, here's hoping!!
