Some of these look like they are going to seed, do I harvest those now?

        • Yep, eat those leeks quick as you can, they'll soon develop a solid core (this can be removed during prep, but the longer you leave it, the less tender 'leaf' there is).

A couple are tiny, but they look good drying in the greenhouse as it's been coming down in stair rods and with cats and dogs thrown in too.

                  • Just had a look back through the thread to see if the techs ever managed to resolve the "lost" pics issue.

Disappointed that it seems the pics have not been able to be retrieved but astonished its almost 5 years since Potty started the thread.

My big onions spoiled by botrytis this year unfortunately but hopefully next year will be better.

                        • I grew shallots from seed this year for the first time, they have come out amazing! Larger than when you grow from sets and strangely no rust either. Next year i will try and grown regular onions from seeds definitely!

                          • Long, short & intermediate day onions

Still learning so I hope it's okay to share - onion plants bought at a local plant sale one of the few things that did well in our veg patch, but might grow bigger next year in raised beds.

I found this former organic onion farmer's website where he discusses the theory that success can be had with onion seeds most suited to one's locale, be they long, short or intermediate day onions.

Have purchased Red Amphora seeds which are intermediate day onions. Going to try both the cold frame as outlined on this site and the warm windowsill....
