  • Pulled up all the tomato plants in plot greenhouse, and harvested all the chillis ready to clean greenhouse out for winter. The chillis will be dried/pickles/frozen or made into sauce.
Planted over-wintering onion sets - the ones I ordered from T&M still stuck in postal system so bought Radar & Electric Red from garden centre. (Bet the T&M ones arrive tomm...) Gave leftover sets to new plot-holder across the path from mine.
Going back down there now to finish fitting gutters to shed.

    • Spent much of the morning making a start on clearing an overgrown shrub border. I aim to make it into a cutting flower border. Biggest job is getting rid of the 'dross' - some will be bonfired but some will need to go to the tip. My garden would be much tidier if I lived nearer the tip!

My all the year round lettuces and spicy leaves are through - will put them in the greenhouse when the toms and chillies are all finished.

        • Have you planted the broad beans outside? When do you hope to harvest?

              • Got 200 stacking / nesting crates fee of charge, identified a continuous supply of blue barrels free for the uplifting, also flat pack cardboard boxes Got contract to supply local Indian restaurant with 100 kg of onions per week.
Cut down my chilli plants ready to store in tunnel under fleece for the winter. My fridge is now full of chillis - and I mean full - have about 21kg of Apache & Cheyenne - loads of good chilli recipes too from the Vine and one from one of my veg box customers for Sambal Badjak which tastes like a bit of heaven (if you like chilli that is). The Jalapenos are hanging in the tunnel to see if they will ripen a bit more.
Transplanted some sage plants into tunnel, alongside PSB, Black Tuscan Kale and Calabrese.
Only have 7 cucumber plants left that are producing so tunnel now almost empty of summer crops. Still have radicchio and winter lettuce to go in.
Have accquired ridging plough, scarifier, single row lifter and potato spinner - back won't be so sore next year.
Sold last of my own potatoes, so off to see local growers in the morning to see what ware tatties they have available.
Oh yeah, had supper, cup of coffee and lifted stair carpet ready for new paintjob in hallway and upstairs landing.

                    • Today I made
                      1) blackcurrant cuttings. Not sure if they'll take, they've got 2 choices
                      2) transplanted my self-sown Rusty (winter) lettuces, and labelled with a ball
                      3) made a new frog home out of sticks, logs, etc.
                      4) poked a camera at Beckham (or it could be Posh)

                      • Today I fitted a door. I scrounged a half glass front door which is in good nick and decided to put a door on the end of my greenhouse.
The old door is in the side of the greenhouse at the mo and is only about 5'6" high. I have a permanent ridge on my nut where I keep clattering it!

The only problem with fitting the quite substantial door was that I had to demolish most of the end of the greenhouse to facilitate it!
Never mind, 7 hours later I have a fully working door complete with Georgian hexagonal brass handle! (found buried in the lottie!)

Next time I go to lottie I've got to take out the old door which will be made to fit my shed, and glaze the old door aperture!

Just wish I'd took a before and after photo as the difference is astounding and i'm well chuffed with results!

                        • No business like shed business....(sorry)

yesterday and into today, finished repairing and renovating my shed, (instead of getting new one), replacing bits of wall, pretend new floor with felt sandwich, painting, putting up shelves, boxing up decorating stuff (hardily used).

Had to start renovations due to rat chewing up the floor, letting in damp and snails and mice.

(Day one found mummified rat stuck to floor.)
Had to saw a bit off the bottom off the door so I can open it wide. looks fantastic now. Will take picture later.

                          • Yesterday I dismantled the bean frames and saved the last pods for seed. Today we went with the local Natural History Society to Scarborough where bird watching on the castle mound produced a fantastic view of one of the peregrine falcons that has nested there this year. Came back and visited our local walnut grove for the third weekend running - 13 lb of de-husked walnuts today (still in shells.) Excellent day.

                            • Today I was A Good Girl....

I let Trousers dig up the tubers from one of the Jerusalem Fartichoke plants so I can make some soup for the freezer tomorrow, and I very leisurely harvested the Borlotti Beans what were ready for harvesting (still loads more to come!). And I did yet more knitting.......!
                              Thank you for listening,

                              • Went to the lottie this afternoon with middle daughter and two of the grandchildren (FUN!!!). Actually it was a good day. Kids made worm pies and covered each other in mud. Daughter and I cleared loads of weeds, dug the last of the spuds (in really good condition), picked a few more runner beans, found some onions under the strawberry runners which are going mad (I really don't want a lottie full of strawberries, and no-one seems to want the spare plants). Neighbour gave me a lovely butternut squash (my only one is probably about eight inches long now and starting to go yellow, so it may make it). Was going to have a bonfire to burn the dock roots etc, but neighbouring houses had windows open so thought I would be nice and save it for later. All dry stuff piled in incinerator ready to go.
