  • Scoured the internet to source the best tasting strawberry varieties so may have to pull out the run of the mill Honeoye and Cambridge Favourite as they come towards the bottom end of the scale on taste and possibly cropping .

Dug up my garden lawn on either side of my existing raised bed. On one side towards the end of the garden, the bed could be around 5x3 feet and the other side is around 10x3 feet, that would give 28x3 feet worth bed space with existing bed. However both of these new beds won't be raised as it's too back breaking project for my DH and besides it'll make it easier to reclaim back our garden lawn should we change our mind about the beds in the future (just throw in the grass seeds ).

Had a thankless task of trying to light up a bonfire long enough to burn the garden waste right down. Must be the third attempt at unsuccesful bonfire.

Digging on the other hand was such a thankful task, the lawn heavy with moss literally peeled away neatly with a digger, no sweat. Simply collected all the dug up turfs and chucked them in the compost bin. Couldn't possibly be bothered to separate (or retrieve) the soil from the grass and besides the soil was on the wet side and stuck closely to the grass. No point really. So pleased that I decided to tackle this most important task towards the 2008 GYO project that had been nagging on my mind.

      • Just planted some more seeds:

        More Jalapeno gigantica
        malaga bird
        yellow peter pepper
        red peter pepper
        orange peter pepper

        and veg:

        spinach america
        spinach bloomsdale savoy
        Tomatoe silitz ( extra early)
        Aubergine Fairy tale
        cabbage best in show

        seeds soaking:
        Okra clemsens spineless
        Okra Little Lucy hybrid
        Okra cajun delight hybrid

        Also fruit:
        Strawberry Rugen improved

tried okra last year and although they seemed to be coming along well at first I planted them too late in the season and then the bad weather finished them off, hence why I am starting so early this year.

        Cheers Chris

              • Pew what a day, managed to sort out and get rid of loads of rubbish that was in shed got covered in dust & cob webs, cleaned the table & chairs, they just need waterproofing now that’s a job for tomorrow, trimmed climbers & bushes, still got grass to cut,and pressure wash tubs & patio.
Did 3 trips to the tip, and did some shopping.
Seen so many spiders today I never want to see another. “Wow they be big” just had a nice long soak in the bath and now gonna chill out with a few glasses of wine for the rest of the evening. Still got loads to do tomorrow but that’s another day.

                • Got so jealous reading about all this gardening being done I decided to take the day off today. Lovely weather down here.

I managed to fill all my new raised beds ready for planting and I also managed to pinch back all my sweetpeas.

                  • Having spent the last few days removing a greenhouse from someone elses garden and putting it up in mine, I built a raised bed today and am generally feeling quite smug!!!

                        • Chilly today my hands are back to being frozen but still managed to sow alpine strawberry Mignonette and also a mix of Oriental leafy veg of Komatsuna, Tatsoi, Choy Sum, Pak Choy, Kailaan and Collards in a Chinese takeaway clear plastic dish as it comes with a lid (to use as propagator). Decided to have Chinese takeaway as Valentine treat with sparkling rose, anything for an excuse to indulge.

                          • This evening I've sown half a dozen small pots each of sp bunion, turnip, swiss tony chard, red nonion and spinach. Sowed 4 peas in each of 15 square pots.

Found out that yesterday the roof fairy had been busy at the Hill and put felt on the noo toolstore roof.

                              • The last couple of days we've been tackling the horrendous corner of the bottom plot. The ground is still a bit on the heavy side but it has now been well turned over. I've waged digging war on bindweed and mare's tail roots I think I've now seen every possible variation and some parts have even been double dug, but boy do I ache. It's starting to feel achievable. The top plot is in quite good shape and I've promised Miss EB will do some planting on there next week, broad beans and onion sets.
