  • Beautiful day here today as well on the island - we're protected from the worst of the weather and it never gets that cold - so dug in the grazing rye I planted in the autumn as a green manure ready to plant my peas in a couple of weeks.

    • Have taken on another half allotment so edged that and marked the paths, OH went over it with the rotavator to loosen some of the very compacted soil ready for me to dig if need be for the potatoes

      Edged the full allotment

Came home feeling rather stiff but very satisfied

      • Went to the member's Potato Day at Garden Organic, Ryton and bought no less than 10 varieties of spud: 1st Earlies Witchhill, Winston and Premiere, 2nd Earlies Wilja, British Queen and Shetland Black, Early Maincrop Salad Blue, and Maincrop Golden Wonder, Pentland Ivory and Highland Burgundy Red. Swapped a dozen packets of seed too, so have such delights as Ragged Jack Kale, and Colossus Leek to work into my rotation.

Have spent most of this evening sorting out umpteen seed boxes and making notes on sowing plan. Including writing in big letters across the top "only sow what you want to eat!" as I'm reknown for growing stuff because it looks interesting and then not being able to find anyone to eat the stuff. Okra anyone?

        • ...with knobs on!

So today I went at the invite of Her Royal Ex-MOMliness to meet up Wellie, Trousers (their darling cat BC (kisses to you, hon - make them give you the rest of the catmintdrops...)), Shirlthegirl43, madmax, (their handsome and eminently sensible offspring - how did that happen??), JanieB, Piskie and Snowdrop (er...can he register here as such?)

..and had the BEST of hospitality, advise, girlsome giggles, and watched some odd blokes with balls....or should that be odd shaped....

ANYHOW - I've had the most wonderful day, and thanks all round.....

          • Well yesterday actually - I went round and checked all the tree and fruit bush ties and had to release quite a lot of them before they cut into the plants.

....well not for long they weren't!!

Water table is finally dropping and only one patch now feels a bit like a trampoline under foot.
Lightly turned over a few beds and weeded the asparagus.
              Had a nice bonfire.
              Lovely day!

              • Sowed Carrots 'Nantes 2' under cloche in raised bed. Watered in with tepid water. Sowed onions, parsnips and peppers indoors. Planned layout for more raised beds on computer. Daughter got annoyed with me 'cause I'd used my day off gardening and not going shopping for her. Promised to shop tomorrow.

Has a good day. Felt I deserved it as I had an 'Inland Revenue' inspection yesterday and it was so soul destroying.

                • Glorious day down this way today. This morning off to the chateau to have a look at the overwintering stuff (all in raised beds, hundreds of onions of various types, garlic and shallots, plus broad beans and peas) and everything is really moving on. Had a serious talk with my chum that lives there to decide on our next lot of beds, how many more to put in and where the beginning of the soft fruit beds will be. He's dug over four 5m x 1m beds and covered them with black plastic and that's where the spuds and probably some runners will go.

Back there next Wednesday to start on the new season's seeding programme, lots of soft herbs to put in and to start the french beans, more peas and the like.

And after lunch, back home and FINALLY finished planting the bulbs from last November, some are sprouting so having left them (actually forgot I had them and when I remembered it was too cold to do anything) it doesn't seem to have done them any harm.

Tomorrow it's tidying up and starting cutting the timber for my 6 own new 3m x 1m raised beds and try to move the blueberries before they get too big.

                  • After days postponing my sowing plan due to flu, finally I felt better and sow some chili seeds today. I harvested collards today...yummy.
As the day light is longer and warmer, my collards are starting to grow again, some of the headless collards are sending some shoots...hmmm free meal and my bunny and guinea pigs love them dearly too.
I managed to lime one of the raised bed and manure another raised bed, It was such a lovely sunny day which is too good to be missed, happy that I managed some small work in the garden.

                    • Laid lots of slabs at the plots and back at the ranch started pricking out sweet peppers and chillies. The tomatoes are starting to germinate and will need pricking out early next week. Some cabbage were sown.

                          • Today will be my leafy brassica veg sowing day plus some carrot, beet, spring onions, basils and some mesclun salad mix. I am not going to over sow this year, just a couple of each and sow again in 2 weeks time and see how it goes for my succession sowing plan.

                              • Sunny Saturday

Lovely sunny day. Bought 3 bags of blended manure from garden centre. Emptied out no1 Dalek compost bin into big wooden compost bin, used some in raised sweet pea bed.

Potatoes are chitting nicely, carrots coming up in big pots in greenhouse. All is well.

And I have a daisy flowering in the lawn.
