  • Whilst sorting through some shallots saved from last year, I noticed that some of them are starting to sprout, so put their bottoms into the pots of seed compost (that I'd prepared ready for broad bean sowing) so they can start rooting, and I can plant them out next month.

    • Today I sowed some flower seeds and more roma tomatoes, all in the house, and a tray of spinach (in the greenhouse).

          • The heated greenhouse was watered and all is well. In the kitchen the fat hot bangladeshi chillis have germinated as have the sweet pointy peppers, aut rubys green german cherry tomato and the millefleur tomato.

The extra cauliflowers are now up too so it wont be long before all of the alliums move to the unheated tunnel to make room in the home heated greenhouse for the softer stuff.

                • Well, there I was, all the sanding sorted ready for decorating when the old girl decided she wanted a fold down trestle table making for the craft room.

So I made up two trestles and cut a board to 5' x 3', routered the ends to make it neat, lugged it up the stairs and put it together ready for her arty crafty doings.

Whilst down in the workshop, I secretly logged online and ordered some dorset naga chilli seeds.

Nice one! I'm too wimpy for nagas, but yesterday I ordered some "Bolivian Rainbow" and "Bulgarian Carrot" chillies to try (nearer the jalapeno/thai types in hotness). I need small plants so that I can grow them in a dog cage in the conservatory - otherwise the cats eat the plants before they can even flower

Today I was feeling rotten so I took the day off work and cheered myself up with some retail therapy. Ordered a large heated propagator for my toms, chillies, etc (just big enough for two seed trays), a seed packet tin (since my current CD storage box is heaving!) and a pair of deadhead snips that look ideal for harvesting beans

                    • Raining. Again. So no gardening - I managed to lose £40 in Wilkinson's though: and struggled home with planters, trays, trellis, poles, bulbs, netting and string a-plenty

                            • I have had to stake my early moon sowing tomatoes with little canes. Think they may be a bit leggy but there is no more light available!
