  • Fixed up another raised bed at the plot, emptied the dalek and put the top 12" intot the bottom for the start of a new batch, spread the rest over one of the beds. Not sure what I'll put in that one yet, possibly the sweetcorn I sowed yesterday, indoors.
Filed a larger bin with some of the free stable manure that gets delivered to the site.
Weeded the overwintered caulis and added a couple of buckets of kitchen waste on the third heap plus two large pumpkins roughly chopped!
Discovered some of the red onion sets are shooting and the broad beans sown in november are looking strong.

    • Planted out the strawberries in the new raised bed, planted the Autumn Bliss rasps so all soft fruit now in except one blackcurrant that still needs a home.

Pulled out tons of mat-like grass from the new allotment so that we could start to dig over and then lovely Gary came up with his rotovator and rotovated one of the large beds ready for the early potatoes. What a star - heaven knows how much time and backache he has saved us.

My hands are full of skelfs from tying in the loganberries (at least that's what I think they are)- vicious things. Typing this is extremely painful!
Hooray - found lots of lovely rhubarb when we cleared some of the couch grass, am looking forward to that first rhubarb crumble mmm.

Parsley, celeriac, leek, dahlia & chillies are up on sunny windowsill.
Iris reticulata have opened in the garden
Potted up 10 strawberry runners for a new bed

if it's bright pink (standard colour?) it might be gerbera, if it looks like a daisy?

been at work, but cut back autumn raspberries, replanted blackberry that was previously in a large pot, planted new redcurrant canes, started seedlings of tomatoes, chillies, herbs...

tomorrow will be planting out onions and starting onion seeds (it's been v cold in staffordshire recently) and *still* waiting for my potatoes and garlic to arrive...

              • Used sieved soil to sow some parnsips into loo rolls.
Used sieved soil again to plant some potatoes in buckets for the greenhouse.
Discovered that the one potato left that got frosted before xmas (was meant to be an xmas potato) has sprouted again and needed earthing up today It's also in a bucket in the greenhouse.
Transplanted some radishes into sieved soil. I think they will be ok like this as I did it last year and still got a crop.

                • Dug a bit more of the raised beds. Checked the seeds in the greenhouse and pleased to see the parsley is up. Went down Lidl as my daughter said they had a gardening week on only to find it doesn't start till monday. Sorted through seeds and want to sow celeriac, swede and colrabi in modules only to find I only had one module tray. So down to Wilko in the morning.

                  • Used the first of my lovely homemade compost to make what will hopefully be an excellent planting spot for the rhubarb crowns received from Tricky this morning. Moved my globe artichokes to a more sensible position at the end of one of my beds. Did yet more digging and weeding and put all the couch grass weeds into a 3 layer thick black plastic bag, to hopefully rot down into something usable in a couple of years ( bit scary to think so long term!). Pruned and cleared round my autumn fruiting rasps.

Good days (well, couple of hours!) work, but still lots to go.... Love every minute though, esp. as this year I have my hens for company down at the plot, plus there are now new born lambs in the adjoining field - they are gorgeous

                        • Cleared most of the superfluous crap from my shed, dismantled the staging in my tunnel, sorted out all my pots, various cell packs and seed trays, now neatly stacked in a corner of the polytunnel, checked the overhead and drip irrigation lines - need a new part for the overhead system
Cleared all the old growth and weeds from my 100m of Swiss Chard.
