Got my white onion sets in, and the spring garlic. Planted two lots of tomato seed and more peppers for the propagator. Potted up some free scabious I got from Parkers last year (Scabiosa perfecta). Cleared the bed that will have the no-dig potatoes in later - it's still too cold for them as yet.Growing in the Garden of England

Earlier this week we got the spring sown onion sets in, another 2 varieties, a total of 110 sets to join the 250 overwintering sets and 140 overwintering garlic that were already growing away on the plot!
Today so far I have sorted out the internet access (changed supplier, so we were cut off on Tuesday, and despite Mr D spending all yesterday trying to sort it, I had to do it this morning!), then started sowing seeds, we've already got lots growing in the windowsils and the back yard greenhouse, but as we're now into March tis time to sow lots more!
Sown today, 60 peppers (5 varieties), 60 chillies (8 varieties), 18 aubergines (3 varieties), 54 more toms (9 varieties)
Planning on sowing (later tonight or tomorrow) another 24 broad beans, red barron onions, and another batch of 6 each of all the types of brassicas we are growing (4 types sprouts, 3 types broccolli, 2 types cauli, 5 types of cabbage)
Planning to try and get the Apiary up on the plot tomorrow, weather permitting!Blessings

Bought my mum some primroses for her birthday and some strawberry plants for me!!
Will be going up plot Sunday weather permitting to try and dig over some more of my spud patch and hopefully Mr Miffy can build some beds now his poorly hand is getting better. When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown

Thursday only managed 90 minutes on the plot due to other time commitments but set out early Rocket puds to chit, checked the rhubarb and, when home, checked the seedlings on the windowsill. Butternut doing well, leeks through and toms. peppers and sweetcorn all bounding away!
Can't wait for sunday!Owning a garden doesn't make you a gardener any more than owning a garage makes you a car.

Today was my main allium sowing day.
I sowed 8" pots with:-- Castor leeks (2 pots)
- Musselburgh leeks
- Banana shallots from seed
- Red ham onions (2 pots)
- Ham onions
- Golden Bear onions
- Shallots Matador F1 from seed
- Long Red Florence onions
I did intend sowing a load of brassicas as well but by the time I'd sowed the above I was a bit fed up (low attention span?)
I busied myself with liming the whole of my two plots instead! The plastic humpa bag with handles on that I learned about on the vine, being only £2 at Tesco's is a really handy aquisition and I used it for spreading the lime! This Magnesium limestone is supposed to be ok applied to the tattie patch as well as it isn't supposed to promote scab on tatties like normal garden lime! Got to the plot nice n early today, hoping that the plotholders who are going to be beekeeping with us would be on so we could erect the Apiary, but they weren't, so we pruned back the overhanging apple and pear trees, finished emptying the grey plastic compost bin and moved it, weeded all the existing paths on plot 1 and rebarked 3/4 of the paths on plot 2!
Now have 17 beds prepped, another 12 to clear and turn over, and another 2 to dig out (once the compost bins at the back on plot 1 have been moved to the side of the plot!), so can safely say we are well over half way to being ready for the growing season on the plots!
Oh, and met a new plotholder, Mike, who's taken a half plot near the front of the allotments, he's going great guns with clearing it and installing beds and paths, I told him about the Vine, so he may well show up here sometime!Last edited by Mrs Dobby; 07-03-2009, 04:18 PM.Blessings
