Today I layed chicken wire under the compost bins. Then I decided the shed looked a bit rough so gave that another coat of paint. Made holes in the bottom of my wheelbarrow in which I hope to plant butternut squash and then painted it. The handles, which were pink plastic, looked naff so I wound string tightly up and down them for a more natural look. Nearly all my toms have now germinated and so has my celeriac but think I have lost my amaranthus seedlings.

OH put fence posts in see general chitchat. He then put up my other plastic greenhouse so I started to pot up some of my seeds. Have loads more to do but they can wait as I need to buy more compost and more pots which I get for free.Gardening ..... begins with daybreak

Actually, I was a bit cross with myself, because Trousers and I went off to measure up our new home to make sure our furtniture's going to fit, and half way there, I broke out in a cold sweat, as I realised I'd left the greenhouse door open at home, and my tiny little Pepper, Aubergine and Tomato seedlings were freezing their nuts off with the cold mist that was creeping its' way up the valley and through the greenhouse door?
The Leek seedlings are just starting to germinate. The Wellie/Scarey55 Jermor Shallots are sprouting nicely, and my chitting potatoes are well on the way.
It's definitely 'all go' in my Little Girls' Greenhouse, and I hope I can juggle everything between the cottage and our new farmhouse home in the next few months.

Finally got the railway sleepers across to the polytunnel today, to form central aisle. Forgot how heavy railway sleeprs are when they are old and have been soaked all winter - my back wasn't too happy with me !
Fixed a couple of joints on the irrigation system that were still dripping (PTFE tape - great stuff)
Would have done more but OH called telling (not asking mind, telling!) me to come home and look after Niamh as she (OH) couldn't get anything done. So spent the rest of the morning and afternoon with my youngest and cutest, on condition that I do not have to go to Inverness tomorrow and can get a full day's work at the tunnel without interruptions.
Plan of action tomorrow - deliver 50kg tatties to nearby village, central aisle in tunnel to be completed, manure tunnel, rotavate tunnel.
Go to walled garden, lift JA's for seed for this year, water and check on all seedlings / young plants.Rat

Today was spent mostly digging, although also managed to fit in sowing some Silverskin Onions & finished a row with some carrots...maybe still a little chilly for them, but nothing ventured an'all!!Also planted our remaining trees...a Jonogold & a Golden Delicious Apple & two plums(without going to check, can't rememeber the varieties).the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Beefed up the farthest raised bed - the beds are level, but the ground is falling away at that end, so I've sneaked in an extra board underneath the existing so that all the bed contents don't escape!
pegged out one side of bed a2 - I wont be able to peg and fix the other side of this bed until the onions are harvested - as it stands, that side of the bed will whack straight through the crop, and I'm reluctant to transplant them out the way, as I'm sure that this will set them back.
Manky screwdriver bit stopped play - so planted 6 off Dunluce and 6 off Lady Cristl (first early) potatoes. Planted them deep, and the manure/soil on top of them is warm enough for them not to worry.
Came home and sowed crimson flowered broadies in pots (many thanks, Flum!) This year I will keep half a dozen for seed to grow here in a pot for seed - I can keep a better eye on them than at mum's where they were last year, where zealous weeding meant I only collected 6 seeds from 6 plants...

Yesterday, lifted all Jerusalem Artichokes (hopefully) and got the bed ready for this year, covered with tarpaulin ready for sweetcorn later.
Gave away the horrible JA's to neighbours."Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble"
Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Had a dig-fest at the plot yesterday. This morning I'm joining a working party of our Britain in Bloom group. Also hope to sow a pot with a few Padron peppers. That's if I'm not too stiff to lift a 3" pot when I get back!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Potted out 60+ surprise chilli seedlings. We'd thrown some self harvested chilli seeds into a takeaway tub propagator on the off chance we'd have a couple of plants...most of them germinated, hehe.
So put 26 into toilet roll pots, another 30 in seedling pots, and the remaining 10 or so into a large pot to fight it out. Let's see how many make itI have a feeling that lots of friends and family are going to be getting chilli plant presents this year
I've got photos of them all on my blogLast edited by Purplebint; 08-03-2009, 12:52 PM.Noob Gardening Blog http://bintgarden.blogspot.com updated 15th January
