What I Did Today Archive 2009

Planted out all kestrel and hunter spuds, even in the bit of the plot only just starting to get sun.
We all picked a shop potato that had sprouted in the kitchen and we planted them in flower buckets to see who's will get the best potatoes next year. My DD picked one for my yet to be born

Fussed a bit over carrots in pots and thinned them out.

Picked up every pot and little thing in the greenhouse to try to discover the culprits that are eating seedlings..... nothing.

Planted 7 Red Duke of York, 1 dahlia corm,about 25 white onion sets, 25 Stuttgarter Giant sets, 15 Duke of York tubers and turned over one of my beds, liberating a few overwintered tatties as I went. Dug over the land inside the run, with the help of the chooks and last of all I harvested a carrier bag full of PSB!

Planted 6 Flower buckets with vivaldi seed potatoes & set them in the greenhouse for (hopefully) an earlier crop. Emptied an old small trough of chives, split it into 4 and re-potted in an effort to give it a new lease of life. Took a few piccies on my mobile so that i can see how things have come on. Gazed lovingly at all my little seedlings in the GH

Planted out broad bean Red Epicure and radish French Breakfast. That's one rasied bed almost completely planted up now! Potted on several sunflower seedlings and more French Marigolds.

At the estate garden I work at, finally finished transplanting snowdrops - another fortnight and it'll be hundreds if not thousands of daffodils to be divided and transplanted.
Cut down two huge conifers - got to play with a brand new Stihl chainsaw with an 18" bar - boys and their toys
Went to see new walled garden - will need a lot of work but I'm up for it - piccies in my album and details on my post about gaining a new veg patch.

Ordered 4 black 55 litre trug tubs from my favourite Monmouth Garden Centre, so that next week (pretty close to the wire, eek!) I'll be able to ask Trousers to lift the four big Buxus sempervirens shrubs that I'd like to keep and take with us to our new house. The trug tubs will be easier to move, given that they have handles.

Whilst I was there, I spotted my very favourite colour of Gladdy Bulbs, so I just had to buy them, because they're much more expensive in Sarah Raven's Catalogue (?) so, I shall tell Trousers that I bagged a Bargain, and he might be pleased maybe.

When I got home, I potted on the eight Ferline Tomato plants that were in need of a change of scene (?!) which, with the nutrients in the new compost for the next 3-4 weeks, will give them the boost that they need, whilst I'm busy unpacking cardboard boxes....

I've also potted up my new Dahlia tubers, and I'm hardening off all of the CCA Salad Leaves, Bored Bean Seedlings and potting up Comfrey Bocking 14, and Lovage, and my favourite Parsley and Mint.....

I watched the herb edition of Grow Your Own Drugs this morning on the iplayer. I loved botany in uni. and about a third of my degree was in Biology, so I appreciate the scientific aspect. That guys makes me want to be an Ethnobotanist. What fun that would be if one got paid for it!!

I then got some lawn chamomile in the mail today and made a plan to pot them up along with 30 brassica plug plants. All the 3" plastic pots are in the sink soaking in soapy water. That is as far as I have gotten! My plan is to grow a path for my allotment in lawn chamomile, even if it takes years of dividing those two plants.

I also found 3 clay pots in perfect condition along with a covered propagator on the roadside and gave them a good home.

Just back from Iona's School's Spring Fayre - bought 7 blocks of tablet (yummy yummy yummy) and then bought some seeds - two packs of mixed squash seeds (6 varieties in each pack, 12 seeds of each variety) and a pack of aubergine seeds - for the princely sum of £1.50 for the lot - according to RRP on the packs, I've saved £9.00 - and the seeds are good til 2010.
Iona boughther usual load of sweets / cakes / tat !

After finishing painting the front room ceiling managed to escape into the garden for a couple of hours. Bliss!!!
I have pricked out leeks, beetroot, kale, sweet williams, transplanted lettuce mix into trough for cut and come again. Popped in a few more onion sets. Planted out some peas and errected some canes.
Planted Dahlias (Griotte and Tyrell). Planted Papaver Perry's White and Picotee, and Echinacea Purpurea.
Moved some of my early tomatoes into the greenhouse, no heat but covered with placcy bottles. Hope they are ok, kept some up in the bathroom just in case. Moved courgettes and pumpkins onto kitchen window sill. Transplanted some turnip seedlings.
Realised that I have sown far too much beetroot, some how ended up with three pots of seedlings that have all germinated. Noticed that melon seedlings have germinated.
Hoping to escape the diy again tommorrow for an hour or so. Going to sort some seeds out now and apply the deep heat for painful shoulder.

Did the weekly Tesco shop only to find cheap pots and plants and compost: Bought some 5" pots to pot on my aubergines, plus saucers to stop wife going nuts when I spill water on the window sills. Picked up 3 canes of Autumn Bliss Raspberries for £3, to compare with the Polka I already have. peeked inside the packaging and there are suckers galore inside on the bare roots! Checked out the 1 pound compost but it seemed pretty poor stuff for my purposes, might do as a mulch/dressing or repotting but not fine enough for seed sowing. Weighed down mini polytunnel with full growbags as pretty windy today. Friend brought over 80L sack of fresh manure which I have dug into the patch where the sweetcorn and runner beans will go.

Planted another set of modules of broad bean seeds, florence fennel and bright lights chard, hopefully will generate some nice plug plants to slot in some of the waiting vacant areas of the veg patch. Cant wait for April to fly by now, I am busy every weekend, so have to make this weekend count on the patch as the next 4 are booked up with no garden time

- planted a dozen Arran Pilot spuds in freezing rain
- went indoors and sulked about the horrible weather (wet, cold & windy)

Spent three (count 'em three !) hours at the garage waiting for them to service my van !!
Got to the field eventually - checked on my PSB and there's enough ready to put it in my veg boxes this week. Transplanted 100 rocket and mizuna into CCA raised bed then transplanted 150 lettuces from cell packs into final growing positions in the tunnel.
Have had to finish early to collect Iona from school and look after Niamh, but tonight I'm going to sow loads of herbs into 3" pots ready for sale - sweet basil, lemon basil, purple basil, coriander, dill and fennel

Went to the lottie this morning finished the digging and creating this year's 'lazy beds'. Planted 30 spuds, 24 module grown Red Epicure broad beans, came home. After lunch I planted out 2 lots of peas - goldensweet (tall climbing yellow mangetout) and my own cross ones - don't ask why they're cross!

It being Tuesday I went to work. Then at around 1pm I felt sick and tired. At 2pm there was a physical manifestation of said feeling and so I came home. I've caught this from dh - he started with his on Saturday night and is just almost better today though he says he hasn't had a proper poo for three days. Grrrrrrrrrrr... And ouch! Tummy hurty now, and all I've done is sipped tea. The outlook isn't great but hopefully better by Friday as we're off to Hastings for the weekend.
