What I Did Today Archive 2009

Yesterday it was such a gorgeous day here I took the afternoon off work and was in the garden by 2ish. I christened my new greenhouse (yey!) by potting up my 4 cucumber seedlings (Socrates F1), 2 per long thin pot, and putting 3 tomato seedlings (gardeners delight) and 2 aubergines (Calliope F1 Hybrid) into their own big pots. Checked my carrots and parsnips, which I'm growing in pots this year, and found they've started to germinate. Just waiting for my peppers to germinate now to complete the set.

On the plot I put up a wigwam and planted about 12 pea plants (a mix of 3 types I think) mixing in plenty of compost and pelleted chicken manure. I'll have to do a fair bit of weeding next but I've got most of the next 2 weeks off - so no excuse!

Tonight I've ordered some seed shelving - a bit like small staging in 4 tiers for my (very small lean-to) green house, and some nematodes for slugs on the plot. Also got some copper tape to put round my pots and the feet of my staging.

LOVE that spring seems to be underway finally but I'm getting worried that weeds will creep up on me and take over if I'm not quick

This week I mostly knocked down a brick building in the garden, leaving a wall between me and my neighbour, if anyone is skilled at supporting garden walls please contact me as it's very old, very rocky and too expensive to rebuild.

I also narrowly missed disaster by leaving around 80 chilli and tomato plants in the greenhouse overnight and it got down to 1 degree! Lucky....

My tomatillos though don't look very happy and I think they are sliding downwards to that compost heap in the sky very fast. I think that cold night didn't do them any favours.

Weather started really gloomy this morning and it took until 1ish for the sunny to burn off the mist and cloud but its bright sunshine now. Greenhouse temperature has been up to 70 in the afternoons. Only using parafin heater on really cold nights and plants are ok at the moment putting on lots of growth.

At last, a day off and some gardening done. Today, Kazzi, cleared out the new tunnel ready for planting. Meanwhile I planted mizuna, chard, hative de niort shallots, spring onions, cauliflower, cabbage and red cabbage.

Before the planting though I unloaded a tonne of vintage manure, lots onto the asparagus bed, the rest to top off beds.

Weeded & removed lots of stones/rubbish out of the raised beds in the park at the bottom of our street.
The council are going to plant them out in a couple of weeks & I said I would keep the beds weed free.
There is one problem.................watering(no tap on park) I hope to get that sorted later.

Today i finally found out that some of the tomato seedlings really are tomato seedlings, not rocket or anything else, so I potted them on, out of 60 (12x5 diff ones) I managed 20 plants.
Also more or less hoping some of the other seedlings are indeed chilli ones, so potted them on too.
Put some beetroot seedlings outside between the garlic rows, we'll see if they survive. Shored up and mended some trellis I got off freecycle, don't know where to put it for the peas. Am having a bit of trouble trying to work out a planting/rotation/need more space!! plan.
Checked all the bagged up sown stuff, red egg aubergines are a success, so out of the bag they came. Nothing else showing...yet...
Trimmed the ivy taking over the fence, as it was just cover, I'm waiting for the clematis to work it's way along, when it's done that, the ivy will be snipped off.
Planted a lavender plant with bunny ears out of the pot and into the front garden.
Trimmed the fuschia bush a bit.

Today it was cold wet and windy but hey ho, things needed to be done.
At my own place I watered my seeds and ssedlings then I went up to the posh walled garden where I rotavated some of the ground and sowed Kelvedon Wonder peas and Witkiem Manita broad beans. Got absolutely soaked and freezing cold, so retreated back to my own place and in the tunnel sowed some more leeks and sprouts before heading home to try and get some heat into me - hasn't worked yet - still freezing !!

Didn't do anything today as its been raining the whole day but was very busy the last 2 days. I've planted my chitted potatoes, bought some strawberrys and planted them out. Also bought some lettuce and cabbage plants that are out in the raised beds. Potted on my mint and also a rosemary plant into bigger pots. Planted all my seeds indoors and they are sitting by the windowsil in the spare room.

Just ran out and looked at the seed I sowed last Sunday in the raised bed and some of the raddish have come through. Feeling quite chuffed about that.

Tomorrow weather permitting I will sow some more carrots. Also I've ordered some garlic off ebay and will pot that on as soon as it arrives.

I've just come in from two hours working in the veg garden. I incorporated more grit-sand into the bed for beetroot, to be sown later this month, and working composted manure into the bean trench and one of the herb beds.
I spent the morning cleaning brass in church so I've had enough activitiy. Time for a meal.

Didn't do too much in the garden today as I went to the local antiques fair in the search for unusual containers. Bought an oak butter churn which I am going to plant up with flowers and what looks like a French wine box in which I think I might plant lettuce. When I got back I continued to put chipped bark in the borders and then fixed a triangular trellis in place ready to support my giant dahlias. All the veg seems to be coming along fine. Dill and coriander have germinated in the gh as well as the strawbini. I was really chuffed as I had my first go at propagating delphiniums from root cuttings and they seem to have taken.

Today I took my seven chicks to the allotment, to their new home. They seem very impressed with it and it's a far cry from the broody box they've been in! I made a mesh door as well as a solid door on my chook house so I could let them have some fresh air if the weather wasn't too bad.

Once I had them settled I cracked on with the run framework I am building for them. The chicks seem unflappable after a trip in the back of my landie followed by me hammmering (and swearing) all day they have just got on with what chicks do and never batted an eyelid!

At the end of the day I have the run framework just about finished and have even fitted an old door I had lying around!

Tomorrow I intend starting to cover it in mesh!

Today I found out that it can take as long to do the garden as the allotment.

Both my new neighbours can talk for England - I guess they are some what relieved that I only have 1 child not eight......I've just moved into a house that used to contain the family from hell!

Consequently they are falling over themselves to be really friendly and it is lovely!

Pricked out the best of my moneymaker and Irish gardeners delight tomatoes into 3" pots. Likewise, did the same with my California Wonder sweet peppers. Think I can see the first of my leeks emerging. Definitely emerging are the marketmore cucumbers and my cherokee trail of tears beans from my windowsill roottrainers. Outside my veggy plot is just starting to green up with the first of my crimson flowered broad beans about an inch high, tiny little carrots seedlings emerging, a distinct line of radish and all of my red onion sets and garlic shooting nicely. My yet to emerge row of beetroot looks decidely dodgy though with a number of 4" wide circular depressions in the line. Cat maybe?

Went to visit Hidcote Manor Gardens, lovely day and had a very relaxing walk around.
Popped into Garden Organic on the way back home and treated Mr Miffy to lunch in the cafe to say thank you for being dragged around a garden! It was yummy.
Came home and planted up my seeds for my three sisters bed in the green house. Watched some tele. Ate tea outside, moved a couple of plants and planned what i will be doing up the plot tomorrow. Feel tired, relaxed and content.
