  • Reluctantly bought some dried Chervil for my Herb Cupboard, as mine neglected to grow or self-seed in The Funny Farm Kitchen Garden.....

    Weeded both the newly Spring-planted Asparagus bed, and newly Spring-planted Herb bed, removing the sunken terracotta pot of French Tarragon to bring into the conservatory now that the Autumn is upon us.

    If I didn't tell you yet that I harvested, chopped and froze the Garlic Chives, I did do that the other day, and today, the remainder of the young Lovage leaves got cut and brought indoors, straight into the fridge, to chop and freeze tomorrow.

    The cat and I had a wander into The Draughty Dutch Greenhouse with a mug of coffee, (me with the coffee, not her, obviously....) and pondered whether we should pick all of the greenies on the 'armpit' tomatoes now finally finally, given that it's October in the morning. It's a toss up between them actually 'putting on weight' before I harvest them to ripen indoors, or just 'to hell with it' and bring 'em in anyway. I'll sleep on it, and decide over the weekend.

    Anyway, thanks for listening.X

    • Finally managed to do a bit of planting today after idling about for a couple of weeks! Planted the strawberries I have propagated from my old plants, so hoping for a bumper crop next year.

        • Weeded the large flower bed in front of the fence that housed the spare veg plants this summer. Filled at least 3 trugs with weeds, pulled up the 2 pumpkin plants - Green hokkaido produced 2 large & 2 smaller pumpkins and Son of Mars produced 2 large fruits. Also harvested 6 sweetcorn cobs - only 5 made it to the kitchen though as the dog thought they looked far too tasty and pinched one!

          • Weede and dug over another small patch in me soon to be veg patch. Got rained off as I had grown 4 inch with the amount of mud underneath my rigger boots. Popped to the garden centre and got onions, garlic and peas ready to plant when veg parch has been cleared.

            • - weeded for 3 hrs
              - put some more layers on the "lasagne" raised bed
              - made Cucumber Relish with lots of chillies in it
              - opened a bottle of last year's greengage wine: really very pleasant
              - racked all the wine
              - turned both of school's Daleks and re-sited
              - planted over 200 onion sets in the gh. That means at least 12 will make it to harvest
              - potted on fuchsias & verbenas that I rooted in water
              - dug up raspberry suckers to plant in the school's garden
              - brought Anaheim & Holy Mole chillies indoors to try & ripen them
              - collected ripe seed from tagetes 'Lemon Gem' & Morning Glory 'Grandpa Otts'
              - transplanted 3 dozen African & French marigolds from my plot to the lotty perimeter fence: tis pretty
              - poured comfrey tea all over my slippers
              - made 6 batches of curried carrot & bean soup for the freezer
              - polished off my M&S Finest halo

              • Decided I didn’t need any more green tomatoes or peppers so I cleared the greenhouse. Swapped a bag of green toms for some fresh eggs with a neighbour who keeps hens. I’ve pickled a couple of pounds of green toms and chopped and frozen the remaining peppers. I wanted to clear the greenhouse and disinfect it before bringing in the containers of winter veg as once they’re in it’s likely to be full until this time next year with one thing and another.

                • Got up. Had a browse through the the vine. Popped into town to see what was going on. Watered in the gh. Picked some grapes and an apple to see how they performed in the juicer. Checked my bubbling brews. Sampled one or two. Cooked dinner (takeaway chicken curry). Chatted with Secret Santa. Sampled some more wine. Watched X factor. Another tasting.....Oh what a busy day. Time for bed methinks.....or maybe just one more.....

                  • got up and made breakfast!!

                    made loads of plans for the kids to help out in the back garden but was thwarted by the rain.

                    went to B&Q for soil and compost for new raised bed but was again beaten by the fact that all the scottish stores couldn't take cards due to some computer glitch!!

                    changed plan by cooking my speciality pasta for my son and his friend instead and relaxed with a nice bottle or two of auatralian cabernet sauvingon red.

                    Bliss!!!

                    p.s. spent most of the day on here too!!!!!
                    May the road rise to meet you,
                    May the wind be always at your back,
                    May the sun shine warm upon your face,
                    The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
                    Until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand

                      • Weeded and cleared long veg bed;

                        weeded leek bed and 2 of the raised bed;

                        cleared the courgette plants;

                        cut back none productive tendrils on the 3 remaining fruiting pumpkin plants;

                        removed 3 ft high thistle and realised that rubber washing up gloves aren't thistle proof (my gardening gloves have vanished in the direction of the landrover workshop); and

                        removed 3 ft high nettles (lots of them) and found, to my eternal relief, that aforementioned rubber gloves are very effective against nettle stings - sadly the gloves didn't go far enough up my arm.

                          • Gathered over two kilos of rosehips for homebrew wine. Prepped them and now in the bucket waiting for the rest of the ingredients to be added.

                            • Yesterday, I made pumpkin, marrow and apple chutney, and a hell of a mess in the kitchen. The main ingredients were all home-grown. I saved seed from the riper of the two pumpkins, but it can't have been quite as ripe as I thought, as only 22 of the seeds sank in water, the others - hundreds - floating, and therefore presumably not viable. I dried out the 22 sinkers in my heated propagator with the top off (bright idea, I thought), and roasted the rest to eat as nibbles or use in home-made bread.
                              This morning, I pickled the rest of my home-grown garlic.

                              • Finished off the rosehip wine - now in the brew bucket waiting for the fizzing to start. Stripped the elderberries off their stalks. Had to put them in the freezer as I haven't got enough yet for the wine.
