  • Started third sowing of sweetcorn: late frost and pigeons have knackered everything sweetcorn related so far, and I am getting desperate! So 40x 3 inch pots made ready and sown with old favourite Golden Bantham. Pigeon responsible fortuitously has been executed by neighbour's high velocity dog. Extra sausage for good doggie next BBQ!

Sown more leek (late I know), and weeded fruit bushes in containers. Watered everything: this spring has been more drought than downpour. Planted out some greenhouse grown salads: I need the space for my second sowing of toms that are outgrowing the indoor space I have. Tomato plants seem indestructible: The first batch have been out for weeks now and have survived some pretty nippy/frosty temperatures, bird attacks, insects and clumsy kids: I think if they are grown hard they are quite resistant.

Started off some more dwarf beans and climbing beans, just in case: some are well up already but the rows are quite patchy and that bothers me, so spares are good to fill in the gaps.

Oriental mustards are looking good, and the container grown carrots are looking good too.

      • Potted up the rather sorry looking specimens of chrysanthemum cuttings I just received from Woolmns!

They were tiny and 'just a say' rooted!

        • Today is my wedding anniversary and me and the missus were supposed to be going out tonight - table booked, baby sitter sorted etc etc (and my wife is currently sat in the hairdressers), However, when we got up this morning both the girls were coughing like lunatics and had high temperatures. On top of that, the wife now has an urgent hymn sheet to design and print off for a big funeral tomorrow (the guy who invented the hole in the wall cash machines died on Monday) and the printer is playing up etc etc etc. Anyway, this morning I agreed to only do a half day, then come home and look after the girls and take them into the garden and get a bit of work done out there. However, I am sat in front of the puter hand folding, inserting and stapling 400 x 8 page hymn sheets - all because the printer has thrown a moody one.

              • Today I put up some short canes and 2 rows of string for my broadies then spent and hour and a half de-stoning my rotten soil in the garden.
I'm sure a skip arrives in the night and dumps a load out there!

Whilst de-stoning I spied some tiny pea shoots popping up but also unearthed a few by mistake

I also crushed up some egg shells to sprinkle around the wigwam of greenhouse grown peas to hopefully keep the slimy beasts away but I may still revert to the slug pellets.

I have dug over my runner bean bed and will be putting the canes up for them later but for now....back to the de-stoning <SIGH>

                    • Rat, I hope the girls are feeling a little better. My granddaughter Ciara had the same thing, which ended with a visit to the doctor and an antibiotic for a chest infection.
Hope you and your Mrs managed to celebrate never the less.
