What I Did Today Archive - 2010

Thunderstorms most of the day and heavy showers (not that they weren't needed) so as I had the girls with me, we were confined to the tunnel most of the day - potted on the last 54 tomato plants, planted the last of the chillies in the tunnel - now have 132 assorted chilli plants in the tunnel. Weeded onion & shallot beds, planted out 6 yellow courgettes, 6 green courgettes and 6 pumpkins. Planted up the first 15 of 35 blackcurrant bushes that will edge the road from the gate to the shed. Checked my carrots, parsnips and beetroot for the show (these are in large pots). Sorted out all my herb pots. Gave everything a darn good drink as I don't get out to the tunnel too often at the moment.
Cleared the van of all my gardening stuff as it's going for Srevice and MOT tomorrow.
Came home and finished trial batch of rhubarb cordial - most excellent - will order some bottles for next week.

I have planted out some bush beans with some marigolds (at last!) and my I finally did my hanging baskets! Picked some MORE rhubarb and have finished off my limoncello!

Today I :-
Planted out Climbing French Beans, cucmbers, gherkins, bns,courgettes,scallop squash and watermelon.
Meanwhile OH concocted a support for the mange tout using prunings off our apple tree, then sowed some parsnips(to fill the gaps) and some carrots,.

Blue sky and baking hot here; seem to have spent most of the morning watering (especially tomatoes) and damping down - also cut some grass, then decided to cool-off and drop into the nearest pub for lunch!

Had a go at crossing another couple of heritage peas - Goldensweet and Ezetha's Krombek Blauwschok. Wish I'd chosen something easier to spell!

- dug over the sweetcorn bed. It will have to go in the same place as last year
- had a lovely bath, pumped out the water to the flower beds
- spent 3 afternoons helping RustyLady tidy up the plot
- planted out lots of sweetcorn (25 Conqueror & 25 Northern Extra Early)
- weeded out opium poppy & bindweed
- checked every chilli plant & squished 100s of greenfly (again)

Planted out two curley kale plants with obligatory wire mesh surrounds to keep off pigeons. Planted three giant sunflower plants. Planted 3 Larkspur plants.
Spent a bout 2 hours weeding and one hour gassing to my allotment neighbours!

Had the hose pipe out for all the wilting veg and now it looks as though it's going to bl@@dy rain!

At Estate Garden, earthed up tatties, weeded parsnips, beetroot, carrots and onions.
Planted out some more lettuce.
Transplanted some Candleabra Primulas into old stone troughs by the holiday cottages to give a bit of colour,
Started into weeding the couch and ground elder round about the bird feeding stations - could take a while !!

I've been 'saving' some First Early 'Orla' Seed Potatoes (until now) to plant the chitted tubers especially for harvesting some time, allegedly, between October and December, and I did plant the chitted's today after 11am, as I'd planned.
Can you think this far ahead to Christmas Day Children?!
No.... me neither!, but I thought I'd give it a go, and I've got a big Smile on my face as I type this, because, actually, I've got nothing to lose by doing that.....
I've planted four tubers in the bottom of a very deep tub, and, as and when they pop some foliage up, I'll stick a bit more compost on top. If the dreaded Blight virus pokes its' head round the door, I'll try and save the day by bringing the tub into the conservatory, and it can live there anyways with the cucumber and tommie plants if it wants to.

I'd almost forgotten to tell you.... I planted up a whole new Herb Bed outside of the Conservatory today (which must be why I'm quite so Cream Crackered), so it's a huge relief to me to have got another 'Shed-Load' of plants planted today, which means less watering of individual pots tomorrow...... Yippee!!

Too hot to do anything much today but I weedkillered some nettles that were taking over at an alarming rate!

yesterday, I planted my 'pretties' bed with 2 x delphinium, lupin, a hollyhock, a papaver and a black grass. These were planted through landscape fabric as the bed is very weedy and I have given up with every other method of control. I covered the fabric with blue slate to stop TRex using it as a potty It was lovely to get up this morning and see one bit of garden that now looks much as I want it to. It needs more plants but it won't be difficult to add them later.

Gazed at my 1st strawberry from the polytunnel, planted out sunflower and dug over another bed for runner bean,also lapped up the glourious sunshine

Was up at six walking the dogs and revising for uni exam. Came home and squeezed into something called a bandeau bikini top. Never was a more unflattering thing devised (mom called them 'pinch-ems' for a good reason!). Planted out savoy cabbage, a few pumpkins and sowed more radishes.

Today I was up at the lottie by 07:00, I weeded, and sowed some Amaranth (callaloo) seeds (thank you mother), In a large pot. Looking forward to harvesting this, as it's a fav of mine!
Oh yeah, watered the plot too.
