What I Did Today Archive - 2010

[Newbie]

Just a quick hours weeding in the flower beds today as been feeling off colour, however managed to fill 2 trug fulls of the bleeders with plenty more to go.

Potting on tomatoes and peppers. I may have too many tomatoes. Can you have too many tomatoes? I guess they can be pureed and frozen. If this weather keeps up I might try sun-drying them!! Watering ... more watering. The gherkin I planted into the flower bed has grown a foot in a week! Picked a tiny bunch of sweet peas - now the whole house smells of them - gorgeous. Please let it rain!

[Two_Sheds]

- planted out a dozen dwarf curly kale & Rodima cabbage
- watered the collapsed spuds, chard, strawbs & yellowing peas (may be too late though)
- burned lots of forsythia prunings in the chiminea, to Himself's disgust (he couldn't light it)
- watered the new plantings
- had our first lotty gathering
- weeded the school's "wildlife" garden (overgrown with couch & horsetail)
- hosted my 1st garden club: 15 children planted up a butterfly bar with me (it was manic)
- planted them a Butterfly Bar (lots of pretties)
- picked off all the curled leaves on the plum tree (aphid infestation)
- watered the front garden, sweetcorn & courgettes (even the weeds are wilting now)
- buried my favourite guinea pig under the apple tree *sob, sniff

Defrosted the freezer and fridge/freezer, threw out stuff I couldn't identify. 2 gallons of elderflower fizz on the go.

Yesterday - went to the plot - it was hot and dry. Picked strawberries and broad beans, did some weeding, did some watering. The promised rain did not arrive last night ... 7 day forecast now says Thursday. Hope so!

Spent all day yesterday in bed with a stomach bug so nothing got done then, still feeling a little delicate today but couldn't resist popping out into the glorious sunshine for half an hour. Managed to harvest a big bunch of Rhubarb, deadhead the climbing rose, "armpit" and tie in the tomatoes in the greenhouse, and also tie in the cucumbers.

[A Life Less Simple]

Waited all afternoon to be able to get to the plot as much to hot but managed a couple of hours this evening, weeded the onions, garlic and carrots (or part of the bed any way) watered the seedlings, strawberries and courgettes as they were looking a bit floppy. While I was doing this my 'helper' planted out the butternut squash and made a start on getting the runner and french beans out too.

Hopefully I will get to do some more planting out tomorrow evening but have a feeling more watering is going to be needed

Weede, watered and mulched the parsnips. Sowed some fennel and some more kohl rabi, Removed a dead mouse from the trap and rebaited (4 this time).Planted out some kidney bean seedlings. Netted the now leafless celery seedlings. Mulched in the brassica bed with coffee grounds. Netted the pak choi just in case .......

Cut the grass in the garden, weeded the peas, sugarsnaps, onions, garlic in the garden raised beds, planted out some Rainbow Chard that had been forgotten about, earthed up Rooster potatoes, then went out to the polytunnel - watered everything thoroughly - pulled broad beans - these were an experiment for an early crop in the tunnel but really not worth it. Got one basket full of beans. Pulled loads of Chioggia beetroot - will give this away to friends as having tried some, I think it is pretty tasteless variety, pulled masses (and I mean a Mondeo bootful) of Rhubarb, lifted my Shallots and took them home to sort out - keeping the largest for the show I'm organising. Sideshoots removed from Cukes and Toms, all tied in - will have first cukes ready for picking next week.
All my Chillies and Sweet peppers are now flowering too - looking like another good crop, and tyhe flowers for cutting are producing loads of sjde shoots so no excuses for not having fresh flowers in the house all summer.
Took the girls to Portmahomack beach for a couple of hours - collecting shells, looking for (and finding) crabs and starfish in rockpools, followed by ice lollies. Good Day (and though I didn't see it, or listen to it, I did have a slight smile when I heard the footie score)

Spent the afternoon at middle daughter's - planted the remaining runner beans for her and watered the beds. It's looking good, and the radishes, carrots and peas have germinated to the delight of the children (and daughter). Glyphosated the bramble patch which is supposed to be part of the lawn.

spent sunday weeding, potting on my victoria rhubarb plants, 85 and counting lol!. picked my blackcurrants that were ready, (bush to jam pot - 30 minutes) and made my first batch of jam with them. picked 1 pound strawberries and got rid of all evidence of next doors cat from my front garden, my most hated job. filled plastic bottles with water and placed in front flower beds to see if this cat deterrent will work. watched footy (or at least it was advertised as a game of football!)

[A Life Less Simple]

After work I managed to rope in a helper to plant out the sweetcorn whilst I moved the muck heap on to a bed ready for beans to go out later in week, checked all the seedlings which are doing ok ok suffering from the lack of water (this will be bought up at the allotment meeting next weekend!)

Got home to find that it had gone 10pm, but was a good evening

Been in the back garden and weeded all the raised beds, planted out the last of the leeks and also the spring onions.
I've also sowed directly some more beetroot and celery, has out of my orignal sowing i've only 2 beetroot and 0 celery,so keeping fingers crossed that it works this time!!!

Also used what was left of the scarlet emperor runners beans and done them for my mum and dad, so hoping it's not too late for those too....

Had to come in as it was far to warm for me and plus i was burning!

Still need to water so will do that later!

its been watering only today , i still have lots of weed clearing to do on the plot but its just to hot

[Newbie]

After a week of being under the weather & doing nothing in the garden i am at last feeling well & raring to get going - and boy does the garden need it!!

I harvested all of my Autumn sown onions - very pleased with them, they are now on racks in the shed drying. Also harvested one of the 2 rows of Autumn sown Shallots - these are in the kitchen waiting to be prepped for pickling. I then forked over the bed & at the same time harvesting 2 potato plants which were escapees from last year. My Leeks are going to have to go into this bed now as they have nowhere else to go - not ideal but i'm sure it won't matter for one season. Also did a spot of weeding, and watering, watering and more watering. Reorganised the greenhouse yet again so i can now move in there & get at the tomatoes & cucumbers easily - these were tied in & "armpitted."

Feeling a bit better about things now as the nearly vacent bed will mean i can get rid of some of the homeless pots of veg from the patio which is beginning to look like a plant junkshop!

Still need to do something about my chillis though which still are only about 2-3 inches tall - any ideas?
