  • At the estate garden today - absolutely chuckin it down all day - was soaked within an hour - modern work waterproofs can't cope with scottish rain !
Anyway, cut back four large beech hedges - lost count of how many times I've been up and down ladders today, put steel posts in at the new jetty for the boats to tie up to, watered the greenhouse, harvestwise some Red Duke of York, some carrots, one head of calabrese, peas and broad beans.

    • Hurrah for the rain. Went down the plot about an hour ago with OH and picked my first runner beans! Pulled up the garlic and put in the shed to dry out a bit, picked another carrier bag of peas and broadies. Harvested some courgettes ... then came home and shelled and steamed broadies for the freezer, put the courgettes in with some tinned toms and basil and that is festering quietly as soup base. will shell a few peas to have with my fish and chips from chippie very shortly. Lots of weeding to do tomorrow!

      • I took some veg to a friend or three, and then I called in on a friend of mine, because she's got this Hog Roast Event this Sunday at her and Derek's place, and Trousers and I are going to be there again this year, but without guests, unfortunately, and I thought I might donate a basket of produce for the raffle, in aid of the Alzheimer Trust, which is the least I can do.
She's very kindly donated the actual basket, so I've brought that home, in order to harvest it all and make it all 'look nice' for Sunday.
        Thank you for listening.

        • Went to lottie to do a bit of weeding. Got way layed and spent an hour gassing to neighbours.
Decided to tie up, take off sideshoots and cut off bottom leaves to improve airflow on my toms. Working in the greenhouse in the sunshine is NOT recommended and I had to keep coming out to cool down. Anyway, all done and dusted and able to see the base of each plant. Gave each plant a doze of Comfrey tea for being such good patients.
Did a late sowing of peas. Dug up some kestrel potatoes and cut a clubroot resistant cauli.
Fed and watered the chooks and finally got around to doing a bit of weeding, not for long mind as by that time I was knackered!

          • Put some more toms in the ground that were languishing in pots to make space in the greenhouse, a few Betalux, a green something or other, a carbon and a cherokee purple. Planted out another courgette, some more runner beans, some borlotti beans [only about 8 of each, am trying the pocket planting thing in some beds now]and the remaining poached eggs.
Dug up the garlic, it wasn't as bad as I feared, some good-sized bulbs in there. Now have an empty bed to play with and nothing to put in it yet. May tranplant some kale in there. And sow some more beetroot. And some carrots and some kohlrabi and some broccoli raab. Ok it's almost full in my head now
Cut back the virginia creeper from the window, more to do tomorrow with the aid of a ladder.
Watered in the polytunnel, de-watered one tank, cut back some over-enthusiastic cucumbers, picked some purple beans, a courgette or two, some more spring onions [will they never end?], some lettuce.
De-armpitted some tomatoes, picked all the rat-gnawed ones and chucked them away.

            • You know, it's incredibly difficult to concentrate on writing What You Did Today, with a completely forlorn Sheep bleeting in your right ear? And with it sounding increasingly closer as you type, you're tempted to go and check that it isn't trying to come in via the cat flap..... but hey, I digress....

I put together a rather lovely trug of vegetables to be raffled off at the Alzheimers' Hog Roast Doo today that Trousers and I went to, an annual event that we support here now, which was a brilliant success and huge amounts of money were raised, even though the weather wasn't brilliant. And we met some lovely new folks, which is always a delight if you like that kind of thing, like I do!!

Back at The Funny Farm later, Trousers watched The Golf (naturally) whilst Wellie potted on a multitude of rooted 'armpit' tomato cuttings in The Draughty Dutch Greenhouse, and then spent quality time feeding more ivy to sheep through the gate?

If any of you have spare Gift Vouchers left over from Christmas, please club together and send Wellie off for Sheep Counselling, I dare you!!

                • Getting going!

Hi guys... new to the forum and veggie growing but love gardening so I have made a start.

Today I have picked the last of the red currants to add to the already frozen earlier pickings and intend to attempt making some lovely jelly out of it. If there's enough juice left over may even have a go at Red current shrub!

I also fed the toms, courgettes and brassicas.

Picked some lovely toms and dug up my first two rows of spuds.... now what to replace them with???? Can tell I'm new to this I should have been prepared.

                  • Chopped down the broad bean plants; watered the shady bed and sowed salad leaves direct (though it may be too hot - was supposed to be cool!); picked 2 cucumbers from the greenhouse; fed cucumbers, peppers, aubergines, chillies & toms in greenhouse; watered potatoes in bags; more stuff in modules (don't know what, haven't done it yet!)

                      watering the tunnel after.

                            • Pruned/picked blackcurrants - almost 10 lbs of fruit, probably the last lot this year
Tidied up raspberry cage at lottie. Needs rebuilding, but not 'til the winter.
Packed a few jars of oregano that's been drying in the shed
Made a few jars of blackcurrant jam, and one of raspberry
                              Gave away loads of blackcurrants
Sterilising demi-johns ready for blackcurrant wine...

                              • Raspberry vodka on the go, and also blackcurrant vodka. Idea is to keep it for Xmas (maybe). More redcurrants to pick today. Bottled the second lot of elderflower fizz.
