Turned a compost heap, strimmed outside our gate and hedge, riddled some compost for the strawberry bed and for the globe artichoke, cleared away some yellowing psb leaves , sat and enjoyed a bit of peace and quiet .....well quiet apart from my robin who was singing me some lovely songs

Yesterday I spread some half-decayed annual weeds on two beds and covered with plain cardboard for the winter.
Also, I picked some tomatoes and a couple of green peppers, added a homegrown onion and slow roasted the lot in olive oil.
These made a delicious sauce for pasta for lunch today with daughter and granddaughter. My hopes are not always realized but I always hope (Ovid)

What I did (yesterday) plant out my elephant garlic, I'm amazed at my self-restraint in keeping all the cloves for planting. I also picked some chillies to try an idea thought of after reading another thread here (Caro - chilli jam) in that I'm going to try and make red, green, yellow and purple jam using the relevant coloured chillies and their sweet pepper counterparts. If it turns out ok I'll post pics (otherwise I'll never speak of this again )"We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses."-- Abraham Lincoln

Planted out some Tuscan Kale,Spring cabbage,Christmas Drumhead cabbage and some red cabbage seedlings into a single raised bed!
Took down, and stripped all the chilli's off my potted plants and used the compost in a raised bed of brassicasPicked a huge bucketful of San Marzano tomatoes to dry and gathered some sprouts and a swede for the dinner.
Turned over part of a chook run which was muddy. Surprisingly soil was bone dry underneath mud!
Collected 16 eggs from nestboxes so after a quick wipe put a dozen in my honesty box!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

We cut down some of the mile a minute climber. Trimmed the Verbana, raked leaves, cut back Lavender and all the 'Munch' Asters which had gone mental; Penstemons too. We can now see the ornamental grass and the rosemary and the heather. The Dogwood will soon be putting on a good show, its leaves are yellow and ready to drop and the Acer... oh my (!!) its beautifull - bright red, crimson. Gorgeous.
There is still lots to do but we've made a start at least.

Dug over one of the old potato beds (how come you never see them all first time round) topped it all up with compost from the compost bin and sowed some Aquadulce Claudia broad beans. Saw a double rainbow and got wet.
Harvested a parsnip - really chuffed that it was so straight as I'd been expecting a twisted one (I'd pre-germinated the seed in the airing cupboard). Gave away a cabbage (these F1s all come at once) - loads more ready to cut. Lifted the last of my dwarf french beans for shelling (these ones are black seeded -very pretty).
Now tired and smug.Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?
