Yesterday, I was passing a local riding stables, and saw a notice, some way down the entrance, about manure for sale. Since I want to buy some, I walked down towards the notice until I could read it properly, wrote down the details, and then walked back to the road, stopping at the entrance to take down their phone numbers from another notice at the entrance. Then I went on my way.
10 minutes later, as I walked down the Old High Street towards the town centre, I was accosted by an oldish bloke who asked me why I'd been taking photos at the riding stables. I assured him I hadn't, and explained that I was just interested in buying manure, but he wasn't having any, insisting I'd been seen taking photos. He beckoned over two young women wearing riding gear and asked one if I was the man she'd seen. She was non-committal, so he started on me again, repeating his accusation. I finally replied "I did NOT take any photos - and I won't be buying any bloody manure from you now, either!", and walked off. He assured me that he didn't want my custom anyway, and walked away in the opposite direction. Honestly! Definitely not buying any manure from them! I'll stick with the source recommended by the local allotment society, more expensive though he is. The Riding Stables looked a bit of a dump, anyway.

Today I collected 26 eggs from 27 chooks!

Took one of the compost bins in the back garden to the lottie along with parasene stove, kettle, foldaway chair and mug.

Popped another ground anchor bolt through the shed floor to make sure it doesn't take off in any strong winds we get.

Started chitting my 2nd early pots (Wilja, Kestrel and Salad Blue).

Sowed another 45 leeks in modules.

Daughter and I made first sowing of 18 artichokes in one of my beloved Desch plantpak setups: the tray, capilliary matting and 10cm pots are a great combination for this lazy gardener, though it uses a lot of potting medium. I am planning on using these to screen out the garden fence somewhat, and their heads will be held nice and high, well away from any dogs that pee against the fenceline (free nitrates!).

Moved chives from cellar to lighter location. Shifted heat loving aubergines and chilli onto the radiators.

I just potted on my tomatoes and chillies. Heck of a root on the chillies - I had to spiral them round to get them in the pots. I hope they will be ok.

Popped to lottie last night, Had small dig but whey too wet. Pulled up the PSB as the snow and various other weathers had killed it. OH dug up a couple of brambles.

Good to be up there have really missed it

Springlike Day

Today I planted 3 rows of shallots on my plot, the soil was well worked & was where my maincrop spuds grew last year. I also dug up the last of last years beetroot which considering the terrible weather has done very well variety "Perfect 3". I had plenty of help from my very friendly blackbird who hoovers up bugs & small worms for me (there are plenty of worms to go round!)

Wahey, finally tackled the moving boxes and other stuff the removal men had stuffed into shed and greenhouse, so I can get my gear ready for sowing. Also trying out my different paper layouts in the back garden for our new veggie plots, but it started to snow before I could make a final choice. Poor wee dog was curled up under a tree it was that cold, and the older one went into the grrenhouse. - he is the brains of the pair!

Yesterday - planted out about 30 peas grown from my own crosses the year before last (F2 this year) alongside some thick mesh to climb up. I also made 5 jars of blackberry and crab apple jelly and took 2 barrow loads of home made chicken-poo compost to the allotment. Soaked some Kent Blue peas - gift from Muckdiva the year before last, never had space till I got the full plot! Made 2 lots of home-grown-veg soup too. Productive day.

Spring has sprung here today. Out in my shirt sleeves, weeding, mulching 4 beds of brassicas, cut down hazel tree and covered three beds with plastic to warm up, re-sited cold frame. Finally home for a bowl of home made veg. soup. Satisfaction.

all my tomatoes have germinated and are now on my windowsill (south facing) in the daytime and are doing well but not one of my chillies have popped their heads up yet.
My fingers are crossed.....

Had to break off my chat with my seldom seen allotment neighbours to take advantage of a pile of steaming tat that had been dropped at the allotment gates.
Managed to barrow three loads before i was beaten by the darkness. Too hot to handle this stuff, so it was dumped straight into one of the compost bins to cool down and mature!
