This weekend saw me pruning the black currants, goodness it was so cold - I was starting to worry that I may well be pruning my hands too - I could not feel my fingers!
Dug some veggies for soup yesterday - parsnip, artichokes, celeriac, and carrots - had potatoes, pumpkin and half a savoy along with some frozen broad beans and sweetcorn, all home grown and turned into a huge pot of very mixed veg soup- it was lovely!
Got propagator set up in the greenhouse ready for a mass seed sowing weekend - maybe next weekend! cant wait - happy new year!!!
Even had a bit of a clean up in the greenhouse.
Saw a Red Kite flying so low over the gardens - they have just reached North Oxford now a fantastic very of him/her. breathtaking!

Potted on my chilli plants. 8 varieties and the leggy seedlings have been sunk into new compost and watered in. Great advice from the vine again, my little plants look good again

Just have to hope they all survive the potting on process and my labels don't fall out !!

Went to Focus DIY and got myself a maximum/minimum thermometer this morning.
This afternoon I sowed Leeks "Musselburgh improved" "Blue Green Autumn Neptune" and "Autumn Giant 3" and Onion "Rossa Lunga Di Firenze"
Never grown onion from seed, but decided to give it a go.
All sown in modules and currently in the heated germination room more commonly known as the airing cupboard.

Are those the red spring onions?

Hope not.
I think they are a long red onion, similar shape to a banana shallot.
Thats what they look like on the packet anyway

difficult ot understand as they are "Franchi" seeds so not a lot of writing on them, and little of what there is in English

I grow these Lunga (Lungi?). They are a dual use onion. If you pick them young they are a spring (whoops, politically incorrect) or salad onion but if you leave them (sometimes if you plant late until the second year) they are a cooking onion. They are not very mild by the way even if eaten young they have a bite beyond normal spring onions. Luv 'em.

Planted some summer raspberry canes.
Sowed trays of french marigolds, polyanthus, penstemmon, calendula.
Sowed big boy, roma, tigarella, marmande, and black cherry toms.
Sowed, hispi and golden acre cabbage, brussel sprout - brilliant-, caulis -cheddar- and calabrese.

I grow the Firenze onions. Can be eaten as spring onions but sown early they make huge torpedo shaped bulbs with a taste of their very own. Make wonderfully tasty onion gravy!

Yet more digging today.... (will need long soak in bath later). One bed is virtually ready to go now (all my beds are too big really, 20' x 5' ish), perfectly weeded (wish I wasn't quite so fanatical about that, I'd get things done so much faster), with 3 barrow loads of really lovely, well rotted FYM spread about. Snow (!) stopped play, but prob a good thing as my back couldn't have taken much more!

Going to sort some seeds out this aft, I seem to have gone from none (had a complete disaster with seeds this winter, as unbeknownst to me water had managed to get into the box - write off for 98% of them ) to far too many!

Notice that at last one of my chillies has germinated, hopefully more will follow...

Just sowed some rocket indoors, and some rainbow radishes in a tub in the greenhouse. Tending the tomato seedlings and watching the early-sowed PSB withering away day by day! Still, got to learn somehow.

Extended the smallest raised bed another 6ft or so, now just need to fill it with soil and then stuff.
Glad I did it this morning as its now hammering down outside.

Sowed some parsnips and leeks indoors, just into plastic doughnut holders, nothing posh like a propagator.

I had my morning chat with my seedlings in the spare room, and have spent an unnecessary amount of time at work doodling allotment plans

Potted on rhubard,chillies, thyme and lupins. They look very good in their big pots

It was a lovely sunny morning so decided to go to Dorchester Market. I resisted the large trays of multicolour primula for £5.00 but weakened and bought Autumn Bliss raspberry canes. 5 for £4.00.

Sprayed nutrimate on chitting pots again (I think I'll leave this as a standing update until mid/end March as it'll be a bit repetitive telling you this every other day!).

Bought some old water cooler bottles from a local water cooler company for 50p a pop. Given the cost of bell cloches in the GC gotta be worth it.

Lifted and carefully packaged some strawb runners for BilboWaggins. Look out for them chuck!
