    • We have invited daughter and sil to try the road kill venison tonight. I slow roasted the shoulder and am not sure if it's edible. However, not to worry, I did my best. As veg we have red cabbage ragout, beetroot, roast pots and parsnips, mashed spuds (irish style) and home grown runner beans. If the venison is not up to par I have defrosted a slow cook bit of beef. Learning curves I love em!

        • Happy days!
Have now filled six days a week for work !!
Monday - estate garden and grounds
Tuesday & Wednesday - private garden and 160 acres of forestry work
Thursday - reclamation and restoration of 2.5 acre walled garden
Friday - gardening and occassional farm work when they require help
Saturday - garden and grounds at local castle.
This leaves a Sunday - my day of rest - for growing my own produce in the tunnel and adjoining acre, as well as for growing young veg plants for local GC. However, there are at least two other "every now and then" gardening jobs that I have been offered so some Sundays will be taken up with them, and then there's my doorman job on a Friday and Saturday nights, and it seems that I am back to square one as regards the hours I'll be putting in

            • Went into Scarborough to have a look at our new pound shop which is where Woolies was (so is large). Ended up buying a few things including 5 dahlias, 2 hostas and 3 lupins at a pound per bag. Don't know what varieties of any of them but for a total £3 I reckon I got some pretty good colourful space-fillers for our rather large flower beds. With veg though, I do like to know the varieties.

They had some strawberries at £1 for 2 plants but as we love Cambridge Favs and neither of us had heard of the two varieties they were selling decided to give it a miss remembering when I bought some at a car boot for 50p each and grew them with loving care only to find that they were horrible.

Bought an elastic knee support for the spring dig though.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

              • Helped Himself to erect 10 bird boxes in the little wood at the end of the village (with land owner permission). He returned the favour by accompanying me to the allotment - I cleared and dug, he fettled up the bean frame. Good job done!

                  • Sowed some strawberries and planted some red onion sets in cell trays. At last got my first 'proper' raised bed together and on the bed, soil turned, compost spread and black plastic over it to warm the soil. My previous beds were edged with paving slabs and were very rough now, I am going a little more upmarket Recycled pallets this time.

                    • Today I came home from work to find 3 of my fruit trees had arrived so popped the roots in water for over and hour and have heeled them in for now as final planting spot not ready yet.

                              • Have just placed my seed order for the year- excluding tatties - and for the first time in three years it is less than £250.00!!! It's gonna seem strange being able to sow mostly everything in one day (apart from successional sowings natch), as opposed to one full day for each of the brassica veg, one full day for toms, one full day for cukes and courgettes etc etc etc. If only the weather would improve - it was way below freezing last night and the temp hads been falling rapidly again since 4pm this afternoon.
