  • Not a lot today, just sowed a few Basil seeds for indoors and then spent as sewing up the holes on our new debris netting, didn't realise how much sewing was needed on it and only done the bit that hubby has cut ready for my salad bed. Need to restock on thread before i do any more. Sowe a few bits yesterday, i started some sprouts off and hubby did a load of the flower seeds that we have bought, some for companion planting and some just to look pretty. Also did a load of tidying and sweeping yesteray including digging the green covered sand out of the kids sand table so we can replace it before they attack our pots and beds with their little spades thinking they are helping.

    • Pruned the dead leaves and stalks of 32 strawberry plants which have over wintered in the large greenhouse before putting them outside. Being a softy, I did harden them off first by leaving the door open for the last 2 weeks, even though they probably didn't need it .

Moved the remaining trays, pots and propogators out of the greenhouse ready for cleaning.

OH was then supposed to spray diluted Jayes fluid over the greenhouse (inside and out) before pressure washing the solution off and pressure washing the floor. Sadly, when he went to turn on the 'spensive pressure washer that I'm not allowed to use (I've very carefully cultivated the image of someone not to be trusted with large electrical garden items ) he found that this was 1 winter too much in the leaking outbuilding! It's broken and he can't fix it.

So I spent an hour washing and rinsing the panes and frame, inside and out, and rinsing and brushing the floor (using the humble but reliable hosepipe) until the greenhouse shone like new .

Tomorrow I have the little greenhouse to do and the trays, pots etc which didn't get done today.

Reckon I've earned a glass or 2 of wine .

      • For once the weathermen appear to have got it right judging by the sunshine this morning. Yesterday was spent indoors tinkering with my grey Fergie tractor because the weather was sh*t and today will be spent at the allotment building my new chicken run.

I MIGHT even dust of the auld bike and ride it to the allotment!

          • Been down to the allotment to re-string the big bean frame with green plastic-covered wire. Hoping to get down again this aft to do a bit more digging.

Yesterday I sowed 6 more types of tomato - 4 of my own selection or breeding. Hoping for good germination!

            • I went out to rake the (north facing) front lawn and mow it for the first time - and it was frozen, at 10am, doh!
Yesterday I sowed tomato seeds, lambs lettuce and mixed flowers for the boarders, raked and mowed the back lawn and did a bit of sweeping. It is the first weekend that we've been able to get out there and have a good look around and I must say I'm very pleased... all last autumns hard work has paid off, the raking of the leaves and the planting of the bulbs and sweeping everything clean in October. All the bulbs are coming through and everthing looks smart. All I had to do yesterday was rake half a bag of leaves and sweep the patio and mow the back lawn and it all looks lovely! It looks like a lot of hard work has gone into it - and it did; but five months ago. I'm so pleased we put the garden to bed properly. My back lawn especially looks lush and green - we wrapped up and had tea outside this morning. The neighbours must think we're mad. Its freezing! But bright and sunny :-)

              • Finally been able to get over to the plot without fear of sinking knee deep in the mud. Started digging over where the spuds will be going and planted some shallots in a bed that had been covered over so it was saturated. My pea seedlings in the mini greenhouse are a good couple of inches tall so will hopefully plant them out soon.

                • Raked over the beds that were not frozen (!) and tidied up generally. Put in shallots and some elephant garlic. Sowed nasturtiums to be friends with the veg and some radishes, long white icicle. Coloured carrots in a raised bed covered with fleece. Sun is warm!

                  • Well I baked this morning Bread, hot-cross buns, scones and 2 chocky cakes, called to NETTO for some more seeds and now I'm going to lift some Leeks for dinner tomorrow, then I'll sow said seeds into modules, the afternoon's still young so there's time to add to the list yet.

                    • Not a lot, the sunshine is nice, but the temperature is really low. My hands and fingers are numb. Just done some clearing up in the borders, clean-sheeted the guineapigs and done a bit of weeding.

                      • Spread the last of the home compost and one cheap growbag over new raised bed. Covered it back over with black plastic to warm it up ready for the tatties at the end of the month.
Came back into the warm and baked some bread.

                        • Had a lovely afternoon at the lottie. First time I have been in three weeks. Meet lots of new like minded people, all our plots are nearly allocated now.
Dug over a few beds, shifted some soil to top up beds where spuds will be going. Finished planting all the bare rooted trees. Did some weeding and had a tidy up. The weather has been fine. Digging in just a t-shirt in March, great ! The sun has been shining all day but it is still cold once you stop digging.

Mr Herbie is working on the new compost bin and some paths for me. Hope Mothers day is like this as I would love to have another day at the lottie in the sun, looks like I will have to trade in a few IOU's.

                              • Picked the right day of the weekend to get cracking at the allotment. Yesterday was dull and drissly todays weather was glorious.

Got quite a way on with building my new chicken run. Completely knackered now though. I must try to remember that I can't do the same ammount of graft that I did 20 years ago!
