I have just finished placing a veg seed order for one of my customers - over £240.00 - think I might phone him and warn him - I did say that I thought he was being a bit keen when he gave me the order to place for him

I'll be planting my maincrop spuds, 'Pink Fir Apple' and 'Picasso', this weekend. Today, I'm buying some large (probably 15" or 18" dia) terracotta pots from B&Q to plant my greenhouse toms in. I'm impatient to start making compost properly, but at the moment the weeds beside footpaths, which I usually go out and collect because I can't generate enough material myself to build it quickly for hot composting, are still much too small, due to the lateness of the season.

Planted out a pack of B&Q's finest shallots (!) Pleased with them until I realised there were only twelve of them in the pack, and one of those had gone soft. Then ran for cover as the morning fog turned to rain...Last edited by sagegreen; 19-03-2010, 12:14 PM.Really great gardens seem to teeter on the edge of anarchy yet have a balance and poise that seem inevitable. Picked up a load of wood chip from a local landscaper (£10 for a metre cubed) and dropped it off at the lottie (very hacked off with the weather down here. Rained quite heavily yesterday and decided to start tipping down just as I was loading the car.....). Got completely soaked and to top it all it looks as though the ground will be too wet for me to get anything in the ground this weekend (unless the bleedin' rain stops soon - been raining constantly since about 1pm).
Oh and on a positve note planted up my Red Duke of Yorks in potato grow bags in the back garden - 2 bags with 2 spuds in each.
Also moved celeriac out of prop into kitchen to get some better light.

More digging of the wasteland. My 5 yr old who is off sick wanted to get some fresh air so we raked a bit that I dug the other day dn we sowed some beetroot. It's probably a bit early but it got him out of the house
I also planted out my peas and broadies from Autumn... not got round to it before. Planted out some peas sown last month too. Not sure these broadies will come to much as the tops have been eaten by slugs I think. But they have new shoots coming. Think they got 'got' while I was hardening them off
Last night I sowed courgette (2 types), squash (2 types), cucumbers (3 types), pumpkin invincible.
Potted on 2 aubergines (the only ones that germinated out of 6), and 3 peppers - ditto.

We did a serious hair-cut job on a eucalyptus. It has been stooled before but eventually gets away again. Loads of stuff to get rid of now - it burns well though!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Had last bonfire this evening until November. The wee bit of wood thats left will be good kindling for the woodburner!
After sorting the chooks gathered some sprouts and parsnips. Took home carrots and swede yesterday so still able to add a bit to our diet, even in the hungry gap!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

Hubby planted some 1st earlies in pots today not sure which ones though, will have to check. Started hardening out broadies and peas, bought another window box style trough for some more salad leaves, drilled the drainage holes and filled with compost ready to plant up. Checked over the garden an just had a bit of a tidy round as kids being grumpy so couldn't get on with much. A bit in limbo at the mo as most of march's stuff is sown but too early for april stuff added to the fact we are going away in 10 days so will have to leave eveything in the care of 17 yr old daughter so do't ant to start anything off that will require much care

Had a good day yesterday. Planted my dahlia corms out in the picnic area. A friend arrived at lunchtime with a bottle of chilled white. Lady S. was out so we were able to sit out in said (not very interesting at the moment) picnic area which is south facing and east/west sheltered. Friend scrounged some chicken pooh and dried seaweed. Worked out that my half bottle of Chardonnay was quite expensive and went back to planting up and seeding the picnic area. Gardening as she is practiced.
Just editing because I forgot to add today. It is persisting down. Sort of day to either sit at the computer or go out and put fertiliser on the pampas grass.Last edited by sarraceniac; 20-03-2010, 01:38 PM.Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Sowed a packet of crimson-flowered broad beans - just to try them. Disappointing number of seeds in the packet, barely half a row. Early 'Swift' potatoes showing through in my 'hot-box', but fleece at the ready for any more cold nights. We are still at risk of frosts, even near the Land's End.Really great gardens seem to teeter on the edge of anarchy yet have a balance and poise that seem inevitable. Monty Don in Gardening Mad
