  • Spent most of a chilly morning tidying up and weeding the paths at the home garden. Then after lunch I went down to earth up the spuds again - another cold night forecast. Back to let the chickies have a run in their little play area while I weeded the back veg plot then settled down to have a read.

    • Got very excited by emergence of first courgette seedling (after 4 have rotted already.)
OH dug lots of dandelions out of lawn
Planted third lot of seed potatoes (Mayan Gold)
Sowed bushy red sunflower seeds in greenhouse
      Started weeding the parsnip bed
      Fastened sweet peas to canes
      Willed sweetcorn to germinate faster
      Started potting on the toms
Ran in to the greenhouse everytime a hail shower arrived (does the sky know it's officially spring time now??)

      • Dug last dozen leeks out of bed as they had started to produce flower spikes, removed couch grass and ladys bedstraw and barrowed in three barrows of well rotted pony poo, for the same bed, which this year will host my squashes and sweetcorn from the beginning of June.
Realised again that I am spectacularly unfit and need to get more exercise.
Potted on a couple of Sungold toms in GH.

        • At estate garden, dug out a new rose bed and planted about 20 rose "Silver Wedding" (bet you can't guess what they were celebrating last week). Weeded the patio herbs / crazy paving. Weeded the front drive. Strimmed lawn edges and round all the oaks, ash and sycamores. Transplanted barrowloads of snowdrops.
Checked veg beds - first tatties just peeking through. Peas putting out first tendrils. Carrots and beetroot germinated

                • Sulked: silly me, planted out lovingly-nurtured runner beans far too early, ditto two courgettes, and they got cold and battered overnight and look mostly dead. With protection they may just recover - fingers crossed.

Sowed: pak choi, mooli, lettuces, dill, American land cress, more coriander, sunflowers, more runner beans (maybe they'll cope better like this?).

Weeded: the bed that is currently green manure, will be squash, and was overrun with grass - new bed last year and I guess the grass roots were kind of still alive. Not any more they're not.

Stopped sulking and enjoyed the sunshine.

                  • Demolishe the second half of my old shed........sounds simple dunnit........it wasn't! Roof was made from floorboarding, covered in heavy felt with tinsheeting nailed over this with 4 inch nails for good measure.

Single handedly carried each of the new shed sections from a neighbouring plot and after afull days work managed to get some semblence of a shed lashed up. The hardest part was holding the roof sections in position whilst I got a fastening on them. Allowed myelf all day tommorow to finish nailing it together, felt the roof and get it habitable.

Quite pleased with progress today though and I managed it without enlisting the help of my Son!

                    • This is what we have done this weekend
Saturday - went to lotty 2 with OH and lotty buddy, we dug, weeded, raked and put theplot back together again after making raised beds only to find they had turned to solid concrete! After much advice here they are now ready to be remarked out, covered and mulched, ready for planting
Sunday - sowed achocha donated by kindly grapes, you know who you are
sowed scalloped summer squash, welsh onions, good king henry and tickeled me tomatilos as I do everyday!
MOnday - went to lotty 1, sowed parsnips, salsify and scorzonara. Planted beetroot seedlings and broadbeans.
Earthed up potatoes and said hello to the jerusalem artichokes.
Today, made me kids come to lotty 2 to measure up again much against their better judgement! Contacted local coffee outlets to try and get a supply of used coffee grains, no luck so far

Felt a lot happier today than I did last wek when lotty 2 had me on the verge of tears!

                      • Brought out the row covers: covered my vulnerable early planted out cucumbers, and aubergines. Looks like a frosty night.

                        • Busy day today, planted out all the brassicas, planted the runner beans (hope we dont have more frosts), went on a slug mission, found about 20 hiding, so set up some beer traps around the garden to catch tem, netted the patch to stop pidgeons, planted another row of carrots, earthed up the potatoes, set up a wire net for the mangetout to grow up, not time to relax.

It's finely chopped stuff - like straw, but made from the hemp they grow for sacking or rope or summat. It's used for horse bedding usually. My friend and occasional contributor here, Bilbo Waggins, reckons that my chickens are so laid back because of the hemp, man!
