  • Amazed 16 8 year olds by explaining how we grow potatoes from a wrinkly brown thing.
We planted the following in the name of science (and because I had some left over)

    1 Rocket
    1 Casablanca
    1 Duke of York
    2 Charlotte

Predicted which would be most successful (Rocket because the seed was bigger!), Picked out 5 same size buckets, carefully measured soil, labelled and put all the buckets in the same place.

They went a bit mental on the 'fair testing' aspect!!

I also planted my own at home in bags, about 8 of each and moved my fruit bushes in pots to the front garden now the sun has decided to show its face.

    • sowed leeks, some lemon drop chillies, because someone complained they didn't get to try any last year, so this year, they can have their own plant and worry about it

      • Yesterday, but didn't get time to post. I weeded raised beds, remade compost bins out of pallets. I was very pleased as i thought i was going to have to dig all the compost out of the broken bins but i was able to fix the pallets around the old bins, so much bigger now. Collected 5 bin liners of leaves ready to put in dalek. Rescued dalek from behind tree house Laid some flags for barrel planter to sit on ready for strawberries that need moving. Spread rest of well rotted manure over mixed raised bed in front garden (it runs the full length of garden 3ft wide 70ft long, with a wall i built out of dry stone that i dug out, it's a very wiggly wall ) realised i have LOST my huge envelope with 4 years of seeds in which is why i didn't post last night as i was too busy searching
You're closer to god in a garden than anywhere else on earth.

        • Yesterday i moved my broken Brassica frame off last years Brassica bed (weight of the snow snapped it completely) and emptied the bed of the dead PSB which also didn't survive the snow. Dug up a few dead plants from the flower bed. Moved My Darlek compost bin & turned its contents at the same time, took the plastic covering off the banked area beside the veg beds which is currently very overgrown, weedy & messy in preparation for nice bloke coming to strip & dig it all for me on Monday. Pondered over what to plant in the area once its dug (4m deep x 12m long), may start a thread with pics for answers on a postcard!

          • Sowed leeks, calabrese, perpetual spinach and four types of lettuce in trays in the blowaway. Put the last remaining shallot bulbs in the garden. Dug up the rhubarb in the garden and put it in a container ready to transfer to the allotment when I get the chance. And bought some more seed potatoes - I already have two trays chitting but desiree is so hard to resist and it was a bargain!

                        • For the past few days the plot had had a good clean out.
All the veggie areas have been weeded, fed and turned over.
the flower beds have been cleaned and roses pruned.
Just leaves the shed to be gutted. Ready for the new season.

                            • Replanted two rhubarb crowns. Sowed two short rows of parsnips, took horti fleece off newly emerging broad beans. Assembled some raised beds and did a bit of digging.

                              • Been sieving my compost and now 'glowing' with the exertion. Played around with my cheapy 99p cloches... at least the metal hoops will be useful. Discovered a cat has found loose section of netting and has obviously sat in state and left its visiting card.. Secured the netting!
