  • Started digging a new veg plot in the large back garden of the house we have just moved into. It was hard work and I soon got warm. The ground has had nothing done to it for about 20 years but surprisingly the soil seemed quite good. I suspect that this is because there is a large tree at the bottom of the garden and the fallen leaves have rotten down onto the spot. Picked op buckets of twich though and I know I will never have got every single bit so it looks like I am going to be plagued with the stuff.

    • Well, only a little bit done over the weekened, but at least I did soemthing after 4 weeks enforced absence.

Broad beans planted at the beginning of month (Aquadulce) are poking through, so planted spares into spaces where seeds deed not germinate (5 of about 25). Then covered with fleece to proetct agianst frost and discourage cats (these are major problem).

Was very pleased to see october planted lettuce coming on nicely. Needs thinning. I replaced the fleece over it with cloches.

Forgot to add: oriental salads, raab brocoli, late sown turnips and perpetual spinage doing nicely too! Mrs loudbaker picked spinage by mistake instead of brocoli, and we had that last night with lasanga: went very nicely.

      • Not me personally but my Dad (the superstar) has fixed a leaf collector that I picked up on free cycle. The front wheels were rusted and now it works like a dream. He collected half a wheelie bin (compacted) full of leaves in about 15 mins......so thats my weekend job sorted!!

        • Sorted out the overwintering geraniums in the greenhouse as well as the little bit of salad stuff I am trying out. All was well, some of the geraniums are continuing to flower.

          • - took school peas & broadies out of the blowaway (too shady) & put direct on the raised beds
            - collected another 5 sacks of autumn leaves
            - started putting those sacks all over the school veg plot, to deter the filthy stinking cat that craps there

                            • Cleared a large area of rubbish land for raised beds. It is on a slope so had to terrace it, did so with big logs from a tree we had topped. Got some plants in that had been waiting around in pots and enclosed the whole area with fences to keep the dogs off. Looks good (actually it was yesterday)

                              • The folk I work for on Fridays are in Australia for Christmas so I'm watching their sheep for them. Trimmed a couple of feet, put out fresh hay, cleaned out bedding and put down fresh straw. Replaced the two empty mineral lick buckets with full ones - I'm saving the empties to grow show onions in next year !
