Yes I did. It was a spur of the moment thing.
Anyone else have one? I have read that it normally takes two years for it to produce nuts. How have any of you that have one got on ? I'm just curious.

I have a huuuge old one in my garden! Produces loads of nuts.
Is your a filbert , cobnut or a hazel?

I bought a filbert many moons ago and left it on our last allotment (who promptly dug it up and burned it!)... wish we'd taken it!

But..we had it for about 3years and if I recall correctly, it hadn't produced any fruit. However, I heard that there were too many squirrels locally to have any success as they took them green from the tree.

I have 3....they always have nuts but the squirrel takes most of them along with my walnuts!

I have one about 5 years old, get about 10 nuts.

Mine are about 20years old and are usually packed with nuts. I recently added a link for Nicos I think? You can pick them green...before the squirrel has interest and let them ripen indoors. My neighbour usually comes to get some from my bushes. I try to get the walnuts as they are fabulous for cakes.

I really think they are worth a go.

Oh... I would be so cross if I found out someone had dug a tree (or anything ) up.
I think it's a filbert. Predictive text keeps changing it to Gilbert so that can be his name.

I have several, all self-seeded. They never produce nuts, and are a bit of a pain TBH. Just plant it well away from the house.

I've just bought one, local GC had some hedging plants well established in pots up for £4. It was the Hornbeam that caught my eye, it's 4' high with a perfectly straight central leader that is going to become a formal lollipop tree :-) hopefully.

Next to the Hornbeams were Hazel, so I picked one up too. I've googled trained Hazel trees but nothing, I don't suppose they are suitable so not sure what will become of it because I don't have a large garden. Didn't buy it for the nuts, it's because I'm nuts

The self-seeded nuts almost always revert back to the v small size native-like types . For anyone wanting to propagate hazels, the best and easiest method is to layer down a few new growth bendy branches from a known good tree, cover with earth and leave to root for about 18 months.

Hazel nuts are v easy to grow, but they do take up space and can be a waste if you can't keep the squirrels from them.

Hazels are v easy to grow and can be pruned to suit yourself - I use the prunings as pea and bean sticks.

I’ve just ordered two twisted hazel nut trees too, one purple one green leaved. Still waiting to hear about the order though ��, although still excited. I read somewhere they are wind pollinated and need two of to allow them to produce nuts?

Nope, only one needed for fruiting, they are wind-pollinated though. Also I believe the purple leaved type does not produce nuts - otherwise v similar in growth pattern.

Just had a good idea, had a fair amount of success grafting apples and pears(not together,it's not possible) and thought perhaps I could graft a purple and/or twisted Hazel onto my normal Hazel, problem is just read on Google that the wood is hard and dry so grafting is seldom successful, strange because I thought Hazel is all bendy and soft? then there's the problem of where do I get the scion from? Would be embarrassing getting caught pinching a bit from GC
