A bit of help please I have a :sorbus eastern promise : if i take the top 6inches off will it spread outwards instead of keep growing up , thank you

I've cut the top off a mountain ash/rowan and it has bushed out.

Generally once you've taken off the leader lateral buds near the top will then start to grow next season. You might want to to take out more than just the tip so that the buds further down burst. The top few buds will try to grow straight and you can then use one as the new leader to bring the height up next season.
