Fruit tree planting question!

I originally intended to have mine spread out, but various mortalities in the early days and replacement with different species (i.e. not replanting a stone or pome fruit where one was recently) means I've mostly got clusters now. To be honest, I'm not sure it makes much difference since pests and diseases can spread easily within a normal sized garden anyway.
