Melon plants.

Just reading about the good crops expected from the fruit trees.
We had a load of melon plants come and was wondering what I was going to do with them. Now they look sad which I hope is down to the cold weather. The winds here would cut you in 2.
Does anyone else have this problem.

Melons in the UK are a gamble unless you can figure a way of giving them some extra warmth - in the Victorian period hotbeds were v popular and can still be a reasonable proposition, if you can get enough raw material cheaply.

Thank you for your message. Got a heater on. The tomatoes are growing well but the peppers/melons/chillies and cucumbers are all struggling.

Well that's another way round it for sure :-)

It might be worth doing a bit more searching on the Internet for melon varieties which people have had success with in this country - I'm a long way out of date inevitably - I believe there were some experiments done on grafting melons onto a hardier root-stock too, but I don't know what the outcome was.

I haven't even sown mine yet. They'll definitely need protecting from cold. What temperature do they get down to at night with the heater on?

Mine, although tiny, are in the unheated greenhouse and not complaining too much, considering I dropped them all on the floor on Sunday. They have to be tough to survive me. Hopefully better weather forecast for next week will perk yours up.
