Well half an apple was missing and, having looked around, the damage looks very like this picture on internet. And badgers do go through the 'orchard' quite a lot.

peck marks are birds (ragged edges) , and round ones on windfalls often slugs - wasps don't often start on fruit with whole skins, but they will move in if there's a mark or split they can use as an entry point , getting stung picking fruit full of wasps is a familiar hazard at this time of year.

A combination of blackbird doing the initial damage followed by a badger?
Also, we don't have apple trees, but our dogs will help themselves when to pears on our trees when they are ripe enough. They might leave canine marks in fruit that is still a bit hard and have a nibble before moving on to another one.
