  • Raspberry recommendations

A year ago I dug up my raspberry canes. The bed had become infested with bind weed coming in from next door which was climbing up the canes. The canes looked desperately unhappy. This year I have tried to keep on top of this plot by only planting quick growing salad stuff in it and frequently hand weeding it.
I would like to grow raspberries again. Is there a variety that would give me fruit next year and that any of you recommend? I don't fancy the yellow ones as I love raspberry jam and wouldn't fancy yellow jam.
I won't plant them in the same plot again.

Joan J is Autumn fruiting so will fruit next year from winter planting, cut them down to about 6 ins after planting. Large fruit and a lovely taste, it's my favourite variety of them all.
In fact I already have some more on order.....

JoanJ is my favourite too - must go and pick some for breakfast!!
I have a few older canes of summer and yellow (?Allgold) but they are poor relations compared to JoanJ.

Polka have been good here this year. Would say does depend on your soil a bit. If it gets wet like my clay here then need to avoid root rot susceptible varieties

if you can get hold of tall canes, plant Glen ample. The stems are spine free and they will fruit next year.

Sorry I just don't fancy yellow raspberries or jam. It is like when someone gave me some white beetroot to try. They tasted great if I couldn't see them!

Autumn raspberries are brilliant in my opinion.
Easy to grow. Easy to prune. The birds don’t seem interested in them ( stupid birds!) and they don’t get raspberry beetle grubs. They fruit when other luscious soft fruit is done and they yield over a fairly long period of time and freeze well. Shop bought raspberries are horrifically expensive and don’t store at all ( frozen are better but organic not available). The yellow ones are a bit of a novelty but you could grow a few for eating fresh and use the red ones for jam.
                And the flavour.....yum

I'm happy with my Autumn bliss raspberries, I get some each morning for breakfast then enough to freeze to keep me going over the winter.
                  Location....East Midlands.

I can recommend the autumn fruiting variety "erika", I planted a few canes of it last year and it has performed really well. It's grown good healthy canes on my clay soil, last year I had a few berries every couple of days right through autumn and into December, and this year its doing well again- the berries are quite big and tasty, definitely one of the best value fruits I've planted, I'm getting about a punnet of fruit twice a week from half a dozen canes and fingers crossed will go on for several more weeks!

Yet another vote for Joan J. I have both Joan J and Polka and the Polka seem to produce smaller, later and fewer fruit although both tasty and freeze brilliantly. Very envious of anyone still picking now......
