My son has been diagnosed with fructose intolerance

... after repeated visits to the hospital and doctor due to regular tummy ache and diarrhea.

Watching him stuffing his face with raspberries from the garden as a toddler is a distant memory now. Seems like I'm going to be the only one eating most of the fruit from our garden.

Sorry to hear this, Chris. Better to know what is causing the symptoms as now you can address the problem.

It's true, it is good to know. It just makes me a bit sad that we have so much fruit and it's harder to share it with him now.

Various things online suggest that stone fruit and some berries are better than apples, pears, melons etc. because they have a different mix of glucose vs fructose. See the chart at the bottom of this page for example:

But even so, I think closer monitoring and controlled doses are required. It's a pity, he loves apples which are apparently terrible...

I'm sorry to hear this - there's fructose in so many thing, not just fresh fruit. At least you know now why that was happening.

I know. They gave my wife a list of things to avoid... I haven't had a chance to read through it yet, but it seems like it's going to be a pain cutting down on it.

How frustrating. But at least now you know.
The most important thing now is making sure he has a good quality of life... you can continue enjoying the fruit...I'm sure he'll find something else which will give him just as much pleasure to eat without making himself ill.

Sorry to hear about that Chris, my daughter suffers from IBS and it’s been experimenting with different foods over the years, her youngest son , my grandson is lactose intolerant and that’s another issue wi5h his skin, I keep suggesting things like goats milk or nut milks li,e almond, but my son in law won’t let her because they’ve not been proven scientifically. Goats milk has been used for years, we use it ourselves when we visit Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands as the population of goats is almost the same as humans.

Maybe when hes a bit older you can introduce him to wine making.
Its a novel way of enjoying fruit....with some good strong cheese.
Its a combo for life.

How severe is the intolerance ?
I have an intolerance to gluten, standard wheat variety. But it is of such a level that I can eat some just have to keep an idea of how much in my head. Nice crispy bun and cheese will give me acid/indigestion but a few biscuits has no noticeable effect.

Estimate at present is a toasted Paninni and filling in one day is just OK, if I have another, or almost anything wheat based, the next day I have tummy problems. It builds up a bit.

One odd thing I noticed was that I would get indigestion but potato based stuff negated it. Wonder if there may be similar for son as in some fruit with (SAY) yogurt. Don't think blackcurrents and chips are a great mix to even try.

Mine is I suppose almost "normal" it would seem a few have the same even if they do not recognise it as such. Helpful in a way as I have a reason to avoid wheat based items but can nibble at a little still.

So couple of thoughts there in - Is there an threshold level and does anything counter it.
