  • Tough as old boots....

Several years ago I grafted a large batch of different apple scions onto MM111 rootstocks.
I can't remember them all but it included well-known varieties such as Beauty of Bath, Blenheim Orange, Spartan, Scrumptious, Red Devil, Egremont Russet, Discovery and some more unusual ones such as Hambledon Deux Ans, Emperor Alexander, Herrings Pippin, Bernwode Milton Wonder and many more.

After grafting they all went into 'rose' pots about 6-7" diameter and 8-9" deep with 50/50 soil and compost.

I left them in a group in the vegetable patch but they have since been badly neglected because other things have taken up my time. Very little in the way of watering, no feeding, no pruning, no spraying.

Now I have a bit more time again I spent the morning tidying and 'found' them again for the first time in a year.

Of the original batch, only two varieties remain alive and healthy: two Winter Majetin which have managed to send out a few short side branches, one Ashmead's Kernel which still looks like a maiden whip and one sickly-looking, badly-died-back, but still alive Edward VII.
