joan j raspberries in pots ?

after recommendations on here I have purchased Joan J raspberries they are bare rooted and arriving on Monday. Guess they'll come with instructions on when to cut back etc
I haven't dug over their permanent bed yet would they be ok if I put them in pots till I,m ready
I realise autumn is the best time to do this but its biting cold up north , nothing starting to grow outside yet

It is usual to dig a narrow trench and heel the plants in, idea is that they are not going to get too dry and also keep frost off the roots. If you use pots keep them frost free and not too dry would be my advice.

Ahhh thank you burnie . forgot about "heeling in " that's a great idea and would save on compost too ..Looking forward to having the time to start my grow my own journey this year , used to have an allotment many moons ago so the brain cells are rusty

I just got some Joan j bare roots a few weeks ago. There wasn't much in the way of stem so have just planted as is without needing to prune at all.

Yeah JD - I've got the same dilemma. I've just ordered my raspberry canes this morning.
New allotment, but the recent weather has scuppered my plans on getting the ground ready (plus I'm not too sure where I want to put them yet).
I'm just gonna shove them in an old compost bag with a mixture of soil and compost, leave them outside on the plot - but try and secure them upright, so they're not going to be blown over.
