  • Espalier Apple Help

    Hello all,

I’ve been growing a Reverend W Wilks Apple as an espalier and I am on year 2.

I am looking for some advice on what to do as my 1st tier left arm didn’t grow as vigorously as the right arm. I’ve kept the left elevated whilst lowering the right to horizontal to try and get the left to grow a bit.

As this is year 2 for tier 1 do I need to do anything with this tier? Just let the horizontal right arm carry on horizontally? Keep the left elevated until it starts to get somewhere? Neither arms are as long as I need/want them yet.

Here is a photo of the tree.

    Best Wishes,
    Arran

Left arm elevated for sure - you could try putting a nick in the bark above it too to help soup things up a bit - think of the structure of a tree as a set of pipes with different water pressures in them coming from the bottom if that helps.
