  • Hardy strawberry varieties

    Happy Easter everyone.

Looking for a bit of advice on hardy strawberry varieties? I live on Cumbria/ Northumberland border and reasonably high. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Cambridge favourite is an often grown one, I grow them along with Honeye and Elsanta, I grow tender ones like Mara des Bois in the greenhouse.

Thanks Burnie. Do those give you a reasonably long season?

Only perennials like the tender French ones have a long season, but they tend to not be heavy croppers, the 3 I grow outside give a reasonable season. Our village is surrounded by polytunnels full of them, to extend the season they cover some early, leave some more open and then cover some later. I had thought of trying it on a smaller scale, but haven't got round to it yet. I tend to grow more for flavour rather than for heavy crops, you don't usually get both from a plant, I also grow the tiny red or white alpine ones, they are tasty, but few make it as far as the kitchen.
