  • Apple and Pear trees

I'm thinking of getting a couple of double u cordon apple trees, and possibly pear trees, for my small garden. The only place where they could realistically go is in half shade. Is a half day of sun enough for them? Sorry for such a basic question - as you may gather, I'm a newbie.

    thanks

My apple trees only get sun from mid-morning til about 2pm, one of them fruits really well every year, the other is a bit feeble and only fruits every other year. So I really think it depends on the variety of apple/pear how they grow in specific conditions. Best to buy from a good nursery/supplier and explain what conditions you have. They'll recommend the best ones.

I've had great crops off my Bramley apple from a tree that isn't in the sunniest of position in my garden. My first impression is that apple and pear trees aren't quite as demanding as something like peach/apricot, grape, strawb, melon etc for sun. But I could be wrong so hopefully more clarifications will follow. I'm planning on planting a duo pear tree in a not so sunny spot in the garden so would be interested to hear more advice.

Thanks for the input so far. The apple varieties available to me in the double u cordons that I'm looking at are
        Cybelle
        Regali
        Delbarestivale

Does anyone know how they get on in terms of sun, and indeed, if anyone has opinions generally on any of these?

        The pear types available are:
        Delsanne
        Super Comice
        Williams Bon Chretien
        Peradel

        thanks

Is there anyone else who has experience with growing apples with sun for only half of the day? Do they do OK?

I have 2 mature apple trees Bramley and Cox and they are fairly close to a shelter belt of trees to the south of them so they really only get sun for about half the day. The Bramley fruits fairly well most years. The Cox isn't so good but probably because they are notoriously difficult and not because of the shade! I have several new fruit trees in a similar position but just 2 years old and they seem to be doing really well.
            Hope this helps Caroline.

Thanks, everyone. I'm going to go for it. It sounds like even if the conditions aren't optimal, the trees should still produce enough fruit for us.

Thanks for taking the time to advise me.
