Mango

I've just eaten the most fantastic mango and I feel bad about chucking away such a stupendous stone. I know we don't have a mango climate but has anyone ever grown one successfully, say, just as a house plant?

Would I try nicking the stone or just bury it and hope?

Like you Flummery - I have often wondered what to do with these fantastic stones. I always look longingly at an advocado stone and want to make a piece of chunky jewellery out of it!

Let us know how you get on - I might give it a try myself, got a mango lurking in the fridge at the moment.

Jennie, I've planted two avocado stones last spring, here's a picture of them just a couple months old. At present they are about three ft high. I used to believe that you can keep (almost) any tree down to a desired size, well this doesnt seem to be the case with avocados

Had a superb mango from Lidl today, might give it a go as well

I think they originate from India so they'll need a teeny bit of heat!

First time I ever ate a mango was about 20 years ago. I was similarly impressed and broke open the stone to get out the middle bit. I planted it up and it grew into quite a nice little house plant. Eventually it got a bit big and out of hand. Think it ended up dying in my room when I left to go to college and didn't leave my mum with full watering instructions. Definitley worth a try though.

Re avocados, somebody told me earlier this year to put them in my wormery and eventually it would split and sprout. It's been there a few months though and I'm still waiting!

OK Phreddy - definitely a case for a bonsai! I have a dracaena which grow to about 7s ft 'in the wild' - it's a few inches from the ceiling but in a small pot and I've had it about 15 years. Migth get a few yearw out of me mango before it starts hitting the roof?

I dug open the seed as suggested and inside was a little plant busting to get out! Actually this was today's mango. Yesterday's was not so advanced. It was like a large bean which was partly sprouted with a little nubby shoot (or root). This one is raring to go. I've planted both and will keep you posted.

Goodness, after seeing that picture, I am tempted to go and buy a mango just to open the stone and see if I can find one of those!! Any tips on method for opening?
