Cherry Tree Rootstocks

Hi, I am looking to buy some cherry trees very soon and have been doing research while waiting for the right time to plant.

I have a small allotment but am keen to get as many cherry trees in as possible. Half the plot needs digging so I was planning on potting them up for a year or two until the ground is ready for them.

I am keen to get at least 4...

Early, Mid, late and a morello

Rootstocks seem to be mainly colt but also some Gisela 5

Does anyone have experience of how these fare when in pots and then when planted into the ground

I have one cherry tree in a pot that I bought as a bare rooted maiden last year. I had the same intentions as you with my fruit trees but had nowhere to put them at the time.
The only advice I can give is to drive a stake into the soil next to the pots and securely tie the tree to it. I've lost count of how many times my trees blew over, especially when in full leaf, as they become really top heavy!
One year later and I'm still undecided where to put them, so for the moment they're still in pots!

My main concern is how the colt (which is readily available) reacts to putting in a pot and what is the comparative productivity between the two rootstocks).

If the rootstock is like apples, the ghisela will give fruit sooner, but smaller crop of cherries than the colt. If space is at a premium I would go for ghisela's. They grow to about 2 meter.
