  • About to stop trying to grow raspberries

Hi, I am a new member and need help badly. I have been growing fruit and veg for over 30 years but am on the verge of abandoning raspberries unless I can find a solution. Rasps grew quite happily until we had a garage built about 5 years ago and dug up the old plants. We put up a fruit cage a few yards away on fresh soil and since then no rasps will grow. The same has happened to friends in this area, all old plants are OK but any new ones rapidly have brown dried up looking leaves which then die. We have tried many different varieties and suppliers including good offshoots from existing healthy plants. Nothing works. I have a very big garden so tried planting some in a new area as far away from the fruit cage as possible but still no success. I thought that it was possibly a virus but I had some of the thorny Autumn fruiting variety which I am trying to erradicate as they don't fruit well here and they appear in unwanted places all over the garden. These are still appearing ,which surely should not be the case if there is a virus, as presumably all raspberries would be affected.
Does anybody know what could be the cause of the problem and can you suggest a variety / supplier which might be worth trying ?

Hello and welcome to the vine Caladh. Sorry I am not able to help with your raspberry problem (I only started growing them this year) but I am sure some of the fruit experts will be along soon and help you out.
    Happy Gardening,
    Shirley

How long have you left your plants after they've appeared to die before you dug them up? Just asking cos it takes some time for the root system to establish and although the tops may appear dead it may be all working well down below. Usual advice on planting raspberries is to cut the tops back really hard.

Thanks for your replies. New plants left for many months to give every chance, I only remove when definately extinct. Plants are cut back on planting.
