  • Pyrifolia Nashi or Asian Pear

    Hello

My mother-in-law has just bought me an Pyrifolia Nashi or Asian Pear tree (have not got it yet) but i know very little about them.

Googling the name seems to come up with very little of use also, so i wondered if anyone new anything about them - how big is it likely to grow, what conditions does it do best in etc etc?

    Many thanks,
    Jane,

    Hi Newbie,

I am no expert in Nashi pear but since i was once into buying it, I had some research about it and still remember several info about it.
Nashi growing is really like growing european/ western pear ( the one with green or reddish peel either for cooking or eating type), so it's requirement is really similar, even the blooming time ( march to april) and harvest time are the same( end of august to september). They need 2 tree for cross pollination ( if I am not mistaken). They are said to be hardy ( to - 18 C).
Happy growing and Happy New Year 08.

          Hi Newbie,

If your nearby neighbour has pear tree (s) it should help your Nashi pollination in some extend. If not you will have to provide one I am afraid.

            Hi Newbie,

I just have a look at my book ( Groente en Fruit Encyclopedie, in Dutch). they are several cultivar of Nashi which is available in NL (I hope you can get them in UK too), they are : Hosui, Kosui, Shinko, Shinseiki,Shinsui & Nijisseiki. The first 5 need pollinator but the last one ( Nijisseiki) don't need pollinator which will be your perfect choice. I didn't buy mine because I can't find the Nijisseiki at that time. The pollinations are done by insect ( bees), make sure you have some bees visiting too ( plant some flowers to attract bees).
            Hope it help...

Ooer... some of a different kind of 'Asian Pear' in the ads above! Not sure that's too good on a family friendly site!!!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Back to the original message, do you know where your mother in law found the Nashi pear plant? I've been searching high and low across the uk to get one for my father but am drawing a blank. Any ideas? Even the RHS don't know any suppliers.

                            Thanks

Hi Becks, wellcome to the vine .

I don't know where can you get Nashy peer in UK but here ( Netherland) they are pretty common. Why don't you send Newbie an PM and ask about it...it is just an suggestion

                              Cheers,
