  • Grape vines.... anyone grown them from cuttings?

I've been given some grape vine cuttings. They were taken when pruning the vines. I was told to use hormone rooting powder and plant them with the bottom bud under the soil and the top one out.
I've planted them in a bucket of compost and put them in the greenhouse for a bit of protection.
Do I need to do anything else bar keep an eye on them and make sure they stay moist?
They are Muscat Bianca and Muscat Bleu.

My next door neighbour used to work on the grape fields and he told me they didn't even do that, they just shoved them in the soil. Apparently, they are very hardy.

So, I think that you have got them off to a good start, let me know how they go on.
    Best wishes

does anyone know how long a grape vine can go on for?

Can't answer you on the age thing Jardiniere but I have done the same with cuttings and they also worked well. Mmm, come to think of it, now is about the time for pruning isn't it?

Is that just what you do, or does it have some mystical French significance?

It's the way things are done here - I'll be out pruning the oldies on our terrace tomorrow of Friday. The cold weather is actually good for the vines.

How long do they last? We have some round here that go back to WW2! And our big oldies on the terrace is at least 19 years old and is very prolific if we don't take the emerging bunches off it - it's wine grapes, not dessert, tho this year I'm going to let some grow on for bottling!

                Thanks Tony,

I'll have a go at mine too then, perhaps tomorrow. I'm glad the cold weather is good for vines cause it's freezing overnight on a regular basis at the moment.

I struck 5 softwood cuttings taken from a vine and managed to get 4 rooted. I put them in a 5" pot and put a polythene bag over it.Once rooted (no hormone) I kept it frost free throughout the winter and it made about 3 foot of growth last year.

Its fairly warm here 8 degrees currently but a bit damp...tomorrow for the pruning has turned into the day after tomorrow for the pruning ......and its not tradition that is guiding me ...just laziness...........

Warmer, windy and wetter here today, the first significant rain for weeks and weeks but even that's warm.

I've also postponed for a few days, have a toilet to paint and tile! Decided inside and warm beats outside and wet at the moment.
