  • Conference Pear Cordon????????

Today I've planted a Conference Pear in my allotment that I had in a pot last year.

I have devised my own cordon system with a network of canes. Basically I have planted the tree at 45 deg to try and bring the lowest branch nearer to the ground,
I now have two branches tied into a horizontal cane 18" above the ground running in opposite directions. I have another horizontal cane at 2'6" above the ground with another two branches tied into it. The canes are a temporary setup until I get posts and wires.
I wondered how many wires are usually used and what are there spacing? Also, should i use the leader as one of the horizontal branches on the top wire?
Anyway, after digging the hole it was well mucked before planting the tree at the previous depth and making sure the rootstock graft was above soil level. Another covering of muck was applied to the surface and the whole bed, about 10 foot by 4 foot had half a bale of straw applied as a mulch! I still have two 'walking stick' cabbages at each end of the bed which will be left for next season, by that time they will be used as walking sticks and the pear branches will travel along the area they are now growing in!

Yeah, I do tend to use a thousand words rather than get the camera out. Unfortunately I didn't get a new camera for crimbo (Boo-hoo!!) I'll try running around the allotment next time I'm there in an effort to 'bump start' my old one!

      Watch this space..............and watch...............and watch..............
