OK guilty as charged, you're absolutely right. I do have a very old oak tree at the bottom of my garden that I do love and I agree with you that old wood is spech and I hate to hear trees being chopped down (as they are at the mo, all around us ) I'm a bit of a wimp about cutting down anything and always apologise to the elder trees if I have to prune them for whatever reason.
If there isn't one, d'ya think we could start a wood lovers anonymous site

My Dad would have joined! He did some fantastic marquetry as a hobby.
I have a black wooden mushroom on my mantlepiece that came from a Roman well in Hayton, east Yorks. The well was lined with this wood and the excavation was carried out by the University and the local Archaeological Society. One of the members was a wood turner and they sold wooden mushrooms with a 'certificate of authenticity' for 10 to society members to raise funding for the dig. I like to think this bit of buried ancient wood now has a new lease of life. Second coming as a mushroom!
The Japanese re-use old kimono fabric in quilts for the same reason. If someone gives you something made of re-used fabric they take it as a wish for a long life for you. Lovely idea, I reckon.

I love trees and we are surrounded by them here ..i have a photo taken in about 1910 ish which shows the hills above the village with hardly any trees but know we are surrounded by them...stunted knarled oaks mainly.
However on my land i have about 40 weed trees - i think they are false acacia - they have leaves a little like rowan and horrible enormous thorns - they all have to go - but i shall plant fruit and nut trees instead - anyone ever grown a sweet chestnut?

I've just given away c.14 stere of chene, two years old and have no use for it but could we shift it - in the end, the majority went to the canton for the poor, nobody else would take it until it was too late.

But we've decided to substantially thin our oak wood, clear some of it and replace with fruit trees. Not a problem because the rest of the back plot is still surrounded by oak trees and we own another huge plot in the woods at the back of the closer area also.

Bummer! I'd have taken it off your hands The way we use wood here that would've lasted 2 to 3 years.

Next time, if you're offering free delivery to Puy de Dome...

I don't understand this quote - 'free delivery', what is that?

In a container? How big is your container?! Sounds very interesting!

It's in a ceramic pot about 14" deep and 18" across filled with multi purpose. It is a very heavy thick walled ceramic which makes it stable.
