  • Need Raspberry Clarity

I've just got hold of Golden Everest, Glen Ample (possibly early season fruiting) and Fallgold and Autumn Bliss (autumn fruiting). I gathered that none of these really need a support . What is exactly meant by floricane and primocane, or is just referring to Summer and Autumn variety?

Also read that raspberry actually prefer more acidic than alkaline soil so I may chuck in some of my existing peat.

Any comments/details on their growing behaviour would be useful, whether they're jungly (like blackberry) or neat single stick and minimum spacing apart, however most of the above raspberry variety are only 2-3 canes each.

The floricane grows a cane this year which will produce fruit next year, the cane that produced the fruit this year is removed at the end of the growing season.

Primocane produce a cane this year that will also produce the fruit this year, at the end of the season the canes are removed.

Autumn Bliss do not need much support if any.

Thanks for the clarification, floricane sounds like a pain in the neck.

        Blackmoor nursery describes:

Raspberries require a free-draining soil and do not like getting wet feet. They fruit on the previous year's cane which must be tied up to support the crop. Except the Autumn fruiting varieties. These crop on one year cane and should be cut back to ground level after fruiting.

So all autumn fruiting (Autumn Bliss, Fallgold, Joan C) are Primocane then and perhaps the reason why I keep hearing they're easy to grow and is low maintenance

I think that the Golden Everest and Glen Ample must be floricane.
